Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Urban Jazz Dance Company will sustain and expand our year-round operations as a Deaf-led dance organization serving Deaf, Disabled, and BIPOC communities across California. CAC funds will support core programming including the 2026 Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival, 2026 Bay Area International Deaf Dance Film Festival, school-based workshops, and our #DeafWoke virtual series. Funding will also strengthen organizational infrastructure through artist compensation, administrative staffing, and essential access services such as ASL interpretation, captioning, and audio description. Through these efforts, UJDC will provide equitable opportunities for Deaf and Disabled artists, increase access to culturally responsive arts experiences, and deepen community engagement. This support ensures the continuity of accessible, high-quality programming that uplifts historically excluded voices and advances equity within the arts ecosystem.

Organization Summary

UJDC educates audiences about current events, empowering minorities, lack of early access to language for Deaf children and social justice. We provide educational workshops/performances at Deaf schools, mainstream programs, Universities, state colleges and seniors homes in the process, creating a healing space for many who have experienced domestic abuse. UJDC passionately visits over 70 schools per year, local to International, working with both hearing and Deaf people of all ages and abilities.
