With support from the California Arts Council, Red Hen Press Inc will continue its core mission, publishing works of literary excellence, fostering diversity, and promoting literacy in local schools. CAC funds will advance equitable access to literary arts programming, strengthen California’s creative workforce, and expand community-centered cultural engagement throughout Southern California. Red Hen Press will deepen its investment in historically underserved communities, expanding free and low-cost literary workshops, public readings, youth writing programs, multilingual engagement efforts, and mentorship opportunities for writers whose stories and perspectives are typically underrepresented in mainstream publishing. Operating support will sustain publication of 25-30 books and deliver free writing instruction to at least 300 students. Together, we will ensure that literary arts remain an essential public resource that strengthens communities, supports artists, and contributes meaningfully to California’s cultural and economic future.
Since its founding in 1994, Red Hen Press has maintained five unique programs:
•Publishing: The annual release of approximately 24 books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with over 400 books released to date and distributed internationally.
•Literary Events: Nearly 30 free or low-cost readings held annually, at a variety of venues in the Greater Los Angeles Area and New York City, featuring both acclaimed and emerging writers from throughout the U.S.
•Writing in the Schools (WITS): Founded in 2003, this literary education program places published authors into underserved 4th -12th grade classrooms to conduct weekly writing workshops and provide free books to students from low-income families.
•The Los Angeles Review: An online literary journal publishing emerging authors and excellent works of poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction from throughout the country.
•Literary Awards: Red Hen proudly presents nine awards (totaling $12,000) each year to emerging writers.
