Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, Red Hen Press Inc will deliver free, six-week poetry writing workshops to 14 Los Angeles County classrooms and publish participating students’ work in a professionally bound anthology distributed at no cost. California Arts Council funds will provide instructor stipends, partial support for the full-time project coordinator, and partial support for the production and printing of student textbooks and anthologies. The program will serve at least 300 students, strengthening writing skills and cultivating sustained interest in the arts, reading, and writing through direct engagement with published poets and the publishing process. Funding would also strengthen California’s broader creative economy by supporting writers, teaching artists, editors, translators, and literary professionals whose work contributes to the state’s vibrant cultural infrastructure.
Organization Summary
Since its founding in 1994, Red Hen Press has maintained five unique programs:
•Publishing: The annual release of approximately 24 books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with over 400 books released to date and distributed internationally.
•Literary Events: Nearly 30 free or low-cost readings held annually, at a variety of venues in the Greater Los Angeles Area and New York City, featuring both acclaimed and emerging writers from throughout the U.S.
•Writing in the Schools (WITS): Founded in 2003, this literary education program places published authors into underserved 4th -12th grade classrooms to conduct weekly writing workshops and provide free books to students from low-income families.
•The Los Angeles Review: An online literary journal publishing emerging authors and excellent works of poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction from throughout the country.
•Literary Awards: Red Hen proudly presents nine awards (totaling $12,000) each year to emerging writers.
