Since 2022, Blue Plum has run film and art programs with kids ages 10-18, and produced six films which were written, filmed, directed, and acted in by kids for kids. Our programs prioritize working with young Black and Brown creatives who do not have access to filmmaking tools like screenwriting and editing software, professional cameras, gimbals, and lighting equipment.

In 2023, Blue Plum hosted a movie-making film club where 6th – 8th graders wrote, acted in, and filmed a fictional horror film called The Old Neighbor (2023). In 2024, we created a thriller film with middle and high schoolers called Entity (2024). They also created a documentary about their neighborhood and the impact that the “War on Drugs” had on its Black residents and the fabric of their community.

In 2024, we worked with a supporting pregnant and parenting teen program, where we taught teen parents about filmmaking, storytelling, and screenwriting. The teens produced their own cooking show where they learned how to make their own baby food for their infants and toddlers.

In 2025, we worked with high school student-athletes to create a documentary about their experience being both students and athletes. In the program, student-athletes gained experience in filmmaking, and experienced the therapeutic value of artistic creation.
Our program activities grant participants access to all facets of the filmmaking process. Students learn about filmmaking, editing, costume and set design, and music production. We also provide them with specialized art materials: professional film cameras, digital art supplies, and editing, and screenwriting software, so students may gain experience handling industry-standard equipment.

Near the conclusion of our programs, we teach participants how to copyright their creative work, and host resume writing and career readiness sessions so students can further their artistic goals in a professional capacity.
