With support from the California Arts Council, A PLACE OF HER OWN (PLACE), an arts-based healing practice serving women of color, gender-expansive people, immigrants and their descendants, and historically marginalized communities across Northern California, will maintain PLACE headquarters at 1890 Bryant, where staff coordinate programming and partnerships and alumni gather for trauma-informed community arts workshops, mentorship, and leadership development.
Funding will sustain core organizational functions including facilitation, outreach, administration, alumni leadership development, and culturally responsive community engagement while expanding community access to PLACE practices through alumni mentorship and shared creative learning. Through intuitive artmaking, storytelling, dialogue, and exhibiting artwork in community, PLACE participants and alumni heal intergenerational trauma, cultural silencing, grief, and inherited survival patterns while building leadership, visibility, connection, and self-agency.
We offer both hybrid, online and in-person lectures, workshops, art exhibitions, lectures and artists’ talks sharing intuitive art making processes for self-reflection, and group discussions that help explore and release generational family trauma. Participants learn to recognize and release family patterns, including links to cultural and societal dysfunction. To claim aspirations, and grow self-agency, the art workshops, artists’ talks and exhibitions provide platforms to artistically answer the question: “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” This is an artistic exercise in “self-agency”.
Below is our foundational hybrid, virtual and in-person workshop series with the goal of providing a printed book and an online e-learning engagement tools.
