Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, VALLEJO CHORAL SOCIETY (VCS) will strengthen its general operations and artistic capacity as a symphonic choral organization serving Solano County and the greater Bay Area. Grant funds will support fair and competitive compensation for artistic staff and contract musicians, helping retain skilled professionals and sustain high-quality performances. Funds will also offset increased music rental and licensing costs, including access to contemporary and exclusive works, and support the commissioning and presentation of original compositions by diverse contemporary composers. In addition, general operating support will allow VCS to engage additional contract musicians as needed, expanding opportunities for local artists while enhancing the artistic experience for performers and audiences.

Organization Summary

Vallejo Choral Society (VCS) is a 501(c)(3) volunteer performing arts organization founded in 1917 and one of the Bay Area’s oldest cultural arts organizations. VCS serves Solano County and the greater Bay Area, with singers participating from Solano and neighboring counties, including Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, and Sacramento.
VCS is open to residents ages 17 and older through its non-audition symphonic choir and welcomes participants of all backgrounds and experience levels. Solano County’s 447,643 residents represent a diverse demographic (32% Hispanic, 25% White, 18% Asian, and 12% Black), and our membership reflects and serves this community. To reduce financial barriers, VCS offers sliding-scale dues and does not turn away anyone with the interest and commitment to participate.
VCS’s core programs include a non-audition symphonic choir and an auditioned chamber choir. Each year, VCS presents a series of choral concerts—typically in December, March, and May, primarily in Vallejo and Benicia, featuring choral masterworks alongside contemporary repertoire.
VCS also supports local partners, including the Mare Island Historical Foundation, by performing at its annual fundraiser at St. Peter’s Chapel.
VCS sponsors the Campanelli Youth Chorus (ages 7–17), providing music education in singing, basic theory, and music reading. High school and college students are encouraged to participate in VCS through waived membership and music fees.
VCS provides free concert admission to all students to expand access to live choral performance.
Together, these programs preserve a long-standing choral tradition while expanding equitable access to participation, music education, and live performance for Solano County residents.
