In 1970, a group of comics, movie, and science-fiction fans from San Diego put on Comic-Con, attended by 300 people to highlight popular art forms and promote artists’ work. Today, San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), otherwise known as Comic-Con International, is the premier popular arts convention in the world, with 135,000 attendees annually who generate $160 million for the San Diego region over five-days. In 2017, SDCC created Comic-Con Museum (CCM) in Balboa Park, which opened to the public in late November 2021. Centrally-located and accessible via public transportation, bike lanes, walking, and vehicles, CCM is 30,000 square feet of exhibit space, 3,700 square-feet of art makerspaces for field trips and guest art activities, and a 140-seat theater with stage and screen. Exhibitions rotate every 6-12 months and share a range of styles, genres, and artists in comics and the popular arts, from Britain’s Doctor Who to binational co-curations Trino, Border Blitz, and Lucha Libre to Cover Story: Six Decades of Comic-Con program covers to Masquerade costumes worn by fans and professional costume designers at Comic-Con and WonderCon conventions. The Museum has a robust volunteer program with 150 engaged individuals who serve on the museum floor and information desk, assist in the Museum Education Center, and support special and community events. Volunteers participate in on-going trainings and provide valuable feedback about the guest experience. The Museum’s Education Center hosts field trips for K-12 schools in and near San Diego County, partners with higher education institutions, and hosts public makerspace hours for interactive, hands-on arts and science programming such as comics creation, programming Ozobots to follow story maps, and puppets.
