Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, San Francisco Recovery Theatre (SFRT) will produce a landmark New Work entitled, “FentAnalysis.” Playwright Geoffrey Grier and his brother, world-renowned actor David Alan Grier, co-developed the project to reflect the voices of artists and families affected by the Fentanyl Crisis, providing:
(1) One creative community workshop in the Tenderloin neighborhood;
(2) Two artist workshops on “self-survival” while giving voice to community; and,
(3) One live performance.
“FentAnalysis” stages the complex social challenges based on the work of the brothers’ father (Psychiatrist William H. Grier), who shook the halls of Congress with his historic 1968 book, “Black Rage.” By integrating the stories of artists and community alike, Geoffrey Grier aims to demonstrate the methods of African American theater as a restorative healing tool for all Americans.
Organization Summary
SFRT programs include:
* Nationally acclaimed, multi-disciplinary performances in California, such as SFRT’s series entitled, “Tales from the Fentanyloin” a riveting portrayal of SF’s complex social dynamics related to Fentanyl.
* Community Engagement events (workshops/shows) in under resourced and diverse neighborhoods. Collaborative partners include: Tenderloin Recreation Center, Tenderloin Museum, Idris Ackamoor & Cultural Odyssey, SF BATCO, North of Market Community Benefits District, AfroSolo Theatre, George Davis Senior Center, Bayview Opera House, Playground Theater, Both Sides of The Conversation, African American Art & Culture Ctr.
* Professional Development workshops for artists covering a range of skills, including Creative Writing focused on new works related to social issues in California. SFRT’s approach integrates various methodologies (such as PsychoDrama) utilizing theatrical tools to bring voice and community empowerment to those impacted by substance abuse or trauma.
* Preservation of cultural heritage in the Tenderloin neighborhood through public education and a series of ongoing events, such as the annual “Night at the Black Hawk” at the San Francisco Jazz Center).
