Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, GenRyu Arts will serve a vital need in San Francisco Japantown, offering opportunities for cultural participation and retention in the face of cultural erosion and gentrification. In this context, assets such as its traditional cultural arts like GenRyu Arts assume greater importance as providers of social, cultural, emotional and psychological continuity. We have created and sustained opportunities for citywide communities to participate in the artistic and creative expressions of Japanese heritage. Taking part in and producing festivals and events, we support and feature performance and social practice work from cohorts of artists serving multigenerational communities that see Japantown as the hub of their identity. We are unique in our ability to nurture artists in classical, folk, or contemporary lineages.

Organization Summary
