With support from the California Arts Council, Holding Space will present three community-based Folk and Traditional Arts healing retreats each serving up to 50 participants of African descent in Sacramento. Led by Dr. Shacunda Rodgers, a licensed clinical psychologist, these offerings integrate live music, West African drumming, movement, and vocal ritual as culturally rooted pathways to emotional wellbeing. Featured artists include harpist Destiny Muhammad, African dance instructor Dr. Uzo Nwankpa, vocalist and sound healer Brittany Tanner, and Native American flutist Chelsea Benham-Callender, alongside master drummers Charles Frost and Charlene Gumbs. Participants will engage in cultural traditions that support healing from grief, trauma, and systemic stress. Funds will support artist fees, venue rental, and program delivery. This project affirms Folk and Traditional Arts as essential, community-defined healing practices that strengthen cultural identity, connection, and collective resilience.
Holding Space remains deeply relevant in Sacramento’s evolving arts and cultural landscape by offering innovative, culturally responsive pathways for healing and connection. Central to our work is the belief that compassion, community, and culture are powerful medicines that create the conditions for repair and restoration. As a newer organization, our primary mode of serving the Black community is through daylong healing retreats that integrate African-centered wisdom traditions and modern mind-body-spirit practices. These retreats include cultural practices like pouring libations, djembe drumming, African dance, community storytelling, and sharing African psychology principles. Alongside these traditions, we offer mindfulness meditation, yoga, and sound healing to address the overworked nervous systems of participants. By addressing trauma at its roots and offering pathways to renewal, we are not just healingindividuals but creating generational pathways for peace and freedom. In reclaiming culture and centering humanity, Holding Space is actively carving a path toward a future where art, culture, and community are at the forefront of healing and transformation in Sacramento.
