Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) will sustain and expand equitable access to high-quality, community-based arts programming in the Los Angeles Harbor Region. General Operating Support will fund key staff, including Arts Education, Gallery, and leadership teams, as well as direct program costs, enabling AGCC to offer free and low-cost arts education, exhibitions, public programs, and cultural events year-round. Funds will also support ongoing ADA accessibility improvements across our historic campus, ensuring that AGCC’s facilities and programming are welcoming and accessible to all. With CAC support, AGCC will serve over 19,000 artists, students, and community members next fiscal year— prioritizing communities with limited access to the arts—while strengthening organizational capacity, advancing equity-centered practices, and sustaining its role as a vital cultural resource for the region.

Organization Summary

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide space for artists to work and to engage the community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events in the Los Angeles Harbor Region.

AGCC emerged in the 1970s when a group of artists gathered to create artist studios and exhibition space in the 1940s-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, California. The site became a facility of the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department in 1977, with the requirement that a cultural center be developed to benefit the community. In 1982, AGCC was established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) to provide a variety of arts engagement opportunities for the San Pedro community.

Today, AGCC provides greater access to the arts—and to artists themselves—for Harbor Region families. In recent years, we have seen how the arts have the ability to uniquely strengthen communities and foster a renewed sense of belonging. At AGCC, we deliver high-quality arts programs while seeking to create safe spaces for gathering, to help break down social barriers, and to encourage community collaboration and wellbeing.
