Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, San Diego Youth Symphony (SDYS) will provide music education programs for over 760 students in the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD). SDYS teaching artists will lead interactive music classes at 14 preschools and through the district’s Early Childhood School Readiness program. For students in 3rd-8th grade, SDYS will provide after-school music instruction at six CVESD schools through the Opus Project, and offer full youth orchestra tuition waivers to Opus students. These programs embed music-centered learning in trusted community settings, reduce barriers to access, and establish clear pathways for sustained participation in music education.

Organization Summary

Celebrating 80 years in 2024-25, SDYS is San Diego’s comprehensive provider of cradle-to-college music education opportunities through: Our flagship ensemble program, housed in San Diego’s historic Balboa Park, features thirteen to fifteen orchestras and bands for musicians of all levels and provides additional depth through chamber music, theory, composition, second instrument camps, and summer opportunities. SDYS’ Community Opus Project has partnered with Chula Vista Elementary School District for 15 years to restore music education programs to more than forty schools and is a national model for community engagement through music education. Lastly, SDYS’ early childhood program, Chimes, works with infants, toddlers, and their families to promote creative youth development, pre-literacy, and school readiness through music education and pre-ensemble training.
