Project Description

With support from CAC, ELECTRIC MOON FOUNDATION will implement four editions of its 12-week music program serving approximately 25 youths experiencing homelessness. Classes are held at temporary housing facilities in Los Angeles, historically Homelight Family Living or Alexandria House. Two professional music instructors provide four hours of instruction per week, delivering structured, hands-on learning in foundational music skills, songwriting, collaboration, and performance. Based on their interests, students learn guitar, drums, piano, ukulele, bass, and more. Over 90% of students are provided with an instrument which they get to keep. (Often courtesy of Guitar Center and Gibson Gives.)

Participants develop creative expression, teamwork skills, discipline, and confidence. The programs culminate in public performances for peers and family members, giving students the opportunity to showcase their growth and experience the accomplishment of performing live.

Organization Summary

Our Music & Arts Program serves youth ages 4–18 living in transitional housing in Los Angeles and
Inglewood. All are experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Many of these kids have
endured trauma, abuse, and chronic stress, placing them at higher risk for academic disruption, social
isolation, and long-term disengagement from school and community.

Research demonstrates that structured arts participation increases resilience, self-esteem, emotional
regulation, and peer connection among marginalized youth. Yet for young people experiencing
homelessness, access to consistent, high-quality arts education is often out of reach due to cost,
transportation, and instability.

EMF addresses this gap by bringing free, structured music education directly into partner housing
facilities—removing barriers and meeting youth where they are. Through songwriting, instrumental
instruction, creative collaboration, and live performance, participants build discipline, confidence, and
healthy outlets for self-expression. More than learning to play an instrument, students learn that their
voices matter—and that they are capable of creating something powerful in the middle of uncertainty.
