Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, EcoArts of Lake County DBA Middletown Art Center (MAC) will deliver YÓMI–PLACE, providing Title I public school students with free field trips to an exhibit of contemporary Native American art at MAC. Field trips center inquiry-based, standards-aligned gallery tours led by a culture bearer together with a seasoned teaching-artist, paired with creative arts studio activities using traditional and contemporary materials led by cultural educator and emerging artist Way-La Brown. All activities model the power of arts integration and kinesthetic experiences to enhance core curriculum and diverse learners’ voices and understandings in an exhibition with profound and meaningful content that grounds them in place-based natural history and Native American cultural heritage. Students will demonstrate their understandings through written and spoken observational notes, dialogue, and art making.

Organization Summary

Community-focused, MAC serves a geographically dispersed region where arts resources are very limited, working to reach, connect, and uplift people of diverse backgrounds and abilities, with an emphasis on service to Lake County’s underrepresented communities.

At the core of MAC’s programming are rotating curated exhibitions showcasing local and regional contemporary artists with emphasis on historically excluded voices including culturally diverse artists and artists with disabilities. Exhibitions serve as a platform for public dialogue, learning, and connection within the gallery, studio, and outdoor spaces.

MAC delivers free and low-cost programming onsite and in communities throughout Lake County. Activities include musical performances, DJ dances, cultural celebrations, open mics, readings, arts education, and community-engaged art-making at festivals, schools, Tribal and other community spaces. Cultural arts projects centered around exhibitions, with workshops and field trips, are collaboratively designed and led by BIPOC artists, culture bearers, and community advocates, ensuring authentic representation and culturally appropriate outreach within their communities, fostering engagement. Public art projects, such as murals and sculpture, invite community participation.

Education is central to MAC programming and designed to engage diverse learners. School field trips and artist-in-schools introduce students to contemporary and culturally rooted artistic practices through inquiry-based learning. Summer camp, homeschool, and after-school programs are low-cost, with subsidies available. In partnership with Woodland Community College, MAC hosts accredited college art classes.

Also a creative workforce development hub, MAC supports artists’ professional growth through exhibitions, public art and teaching opportunities, promotion, and documentation. Youth are mentored in studio, gallery, and curatorial assistance, teaching, community activation, mural-making, project coordination, promotion, and operations—building skills, leadership, and pathways to higher education and employment in the arts, nonprofit, and other sectors.

All programs are free, by donation, or low-cost, ensuring equitable access, elevating underrepresented voices, and cultivating a resilient arts ecosystem that strengthens community connection and well-being.
