Museum Educator
Temporary, Part-Time/ Non-Exempt

Named one of “America’s Cultural Treasures” by the Ford Foundation, the Japanese American National Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate and AAM accredited. JANM is based in Downtown LA’s historic Little Tokyo, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.

Museum Educators for group visits facilitate student group gallery experiences and activities of the School Visits Program. On Tuesday through Friday, this will involve working with student groups and volunteer docents. This position will work collaboratively with Education staff to fulfill institutional strategic priorities, the Education Unit Teaching Philosophy, and On-Site School Visit Learning Objectives. May occasionally be asked to provide gallery visit experiences for adult audiences in the afternoon, evening, or weekend hours if schedule permits. Anti-bias and anti-racist teaching must be promoted. Position is part time as scheduled, temporary March 2023 thru December 31, 2023 with possible extension. Mostly Tuesdays through Fridays during the school year in 3 hour shifts between the hours of 9:00 am – 1:00 pm for a total of 12 – 15 hours per week. When schools are not in session, shifts will be fewer.
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum one year working in an educational environment with students. Experience in education, public speaking, and customer service in a museum is beneficial. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Demonstrated commitment and flexibility in order to ensure a high level of quality service. Ability to work well under the time constraints of a set schedule. Ability to remain flexible at all times to adjust to changing student needs. Ability to problem solve, adjust, and provide appropriate action when unanticipated need arises. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus. Experienced with MS Office and Google Suite preferred. Requires COVID-19 vaccine and bivalent (Fall 2022) booster dose when eligible.
