Job Title: Teaching Artist (PT) (Violin/Viola)
Reports to: Community Opus Program Manager
Status: Part-time, non-exempt
Starts: As soon as possible

About This Position
The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory is seeking a Teaching Artist to support
beginning and intermediate students in Chula Vista and/or City Heights, and to teach
private/group lessons to beginning and intermediate students in Balboa Park, online, or other
locations. Our Teaching Artists build musical skills, teach fundamentals, amplify student creativity,
serve as mentors and role models, and build community with students and families. They are
committed to our core values of commitment, creativity, equity, collaboration, and service.

Position Responsibilities
● Teach appropriate pedagogy aligned with California Arts Standards and/or SDYS audition
requirements
● Contribute to the development of curriculum and instructional philosophy as appropriate
● Provide artistic support and guidance in the classroom at partner schools
● Create a consistent and safe environment with procedures and expectations
● Encourage learning and performance activities that build self-confidence and leadership
● Actively supervise students; take and record student attendance, as appropriate
● Form, build, and maintain relationships with stakeholders
● Go through required protocol for fingerprinting and TB testing at the district and county
offices, if required
● Maintain CPR and First Aid training certification

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
● Strong musical expertise on specified instrument
● Private and group lesson teaching experience, preferably with elementary school students
● Culturally sensitive with experience teaching diverse learners
● Commitment to centering equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching practice
● Lifelong learner and growth mindset
● Classroom management experience
● Flexibility and problem solving skills for situations that change or do not go as planned
● Ability to be a team player and enhance a team that is passionate about music education
● Excellent communication with a basic familiarity with Google applications (i.e. Gmail, Google
Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive) and video chat software (e.g. Zoom).
● Comfort and willingness to work with and through technology, including basic video and
audio editing.
● Spanish/English bilingual strongly preferred.

Additional
This is a part-time position with work responsibilities on weekdays, weekends and/or evenings
according to the class or lesson schedule. Teaching Artist responsibilities may take place in
person and/or through live or pre-recorded video, per SDYS.
This position requires sitting, walking, standing, climbing stairs, hearing, speaking, playing an
instrument, using technology, being able to lift up to 25 lb. and driving to locations pertaining to
organizational operations. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to
verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required
employment eligibility verification document upon hire.
