Subject: No Cost – Summer 2021 Art Courses at Performing Arts Workshop Powerhouse

Dear Community,

We hope you and your loved ones are well. After successful fall classes at the Powerhouse, Performing Arts Workshop is excited to bring The Community Arts Collective to our neighbors in Excelsior/OMI and other nearby neighborhoods. In 2017, with the support and advocacy of the Friends of Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse and a partnership with the SF Rec and Parks Department and CAST, the Workshop was granted the honor of being sole tenant and program provider of the Geneva Powerhouse. We are delighted to be a center and youth arts education hub for cultivating students’ creative potential.

Renovations at the Geneva Powerhouse are complete! With the health and safety of our community in mind, we will continue to provide no cost, high-quality arts intensives for young people this summer through our Distance Learning program as well as limited, In-Person programming.   

We are thrilled to continue our Powerhouse: Reimagine Distance Learning Community Arts Collective series in July for ages 10-18 in dance, spoken word, and visual arts. 

Reimagine Distance Learning is a sequential, multi-language, 15-session art program. Through live-streamed sessions and community building curricula, students will have the opportunity to engage in learning, contextualizing, and practicing an art form in community with a teaching artist and peers. 

Summer programming is scheduled to begin on July 6th and run through July 30th. Live stream links are shared once a week for fifteen weeks allowing students to have real time interaction with peers and a teaching artist.

Listening to and responding to community needs is a Workshop core value. As such, we are providing options for students to determine our course offerings. We will offer 1-3 of the courses listed below based on enrollment. 

Potential Course offerings:

Distance Learning:

Hip Hop Dance: Beginner & Intermediate (ages 10-13)

Hip Hop & Creative Movement (ages 14-18)

Visual Arts & Spoken Word (ages 10-18)

Afro-Peruvian Zapateo (ages 10-18)

In Person:

Moving Towards Comics (ages 14-18)

$1000.00 stipend

Participants and/or caretakers please register by April 30th, 2021

We are also excited to announce that we will offer an in-person Creative Movement & Comic course for ages 14-18 at the Powerhouse, located at 2301 San Jose Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94112. Students will receive a $1000.00 stipend for completing class.
