An Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (JANM.org) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. JANM’s permanent collections has over 150,000 objects that chronicle the Japanese American experience in its entirety from early immigration to the present.
The Collections Assistant will advance collections-related work on the new core exhibition as well as assist with other collections-related projects, including, but not limited to: artifact donation offers, research requests, cataloging and rehousing artifacts, collections care, exhibition installations and deinstallations, and loans. Position is temporary with funding through 6/30/2024.
For the new core exhibition: compile and track information on artifacts under consideration for the new core exhibition and share with lead curator and exhibition development team; maintain the artifact checklist for the exhibition and produce object reports as requested by the lead curator and exhibition development team; coordinate digitization of artifacts, artworks, and archival materials under consideration for the new core exhibition.
Minimum 2 years of experience working in a museum or library, preferably working with an artifact or archival collection. Understanding of museum registrarial processes and procedures is a plus. Knowledge of collections management databases, particularly TMS is preferred.
High school diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Able to maintain positive relations with a wide variety of internal and external constituents. Internet savvy, MS Office, Google Calendar, Gmail, TMS preferred. Adobe Photoshop skills are ideal.
