Moseuk is a Nationally Award winning abstract painter, who works primarily in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. Pat is in the Northlight’s Acrylic Works Art Books 3 & 6, was the finalists in Artist’s Magazine’s Annual Art Competition 2014,2017 & 2019, Bold Brush Award for Best Abstract in 2020 and has had several articles written about her. She is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Honor Society, International Society of Acrylic Painters, California Watercolor Association, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia and San Diego Watercolor Society. Currently her painting “Shapes Within” is in the American Watercolor Society’s travel exhibition for 2024 & 2025. Pat has been teaching fine art for several years and along with her husband, they own and operate M.J. Studios Art and Music in Pleasant Hill, California.
In this workshop you will experience the instructor’s hands-on demonstration, fundamental compositional layouts, technique, color, value, line, form, collage and mark making. Imagine painting with a credit card and found objects around your house. We will learn the joy and freedom of abstraction and to tap into our intuition. At the end of each day there will be a group critique. This class is for all levels. If you make a mistake so what, it’s a happy mistake! There are some rules and there are no rules! Oh My Gouache! 10 Things you must do to tame the beast! In recent years, you may have noticed on social media a resurgence in popularity of gouache. It is a really great medium for sketching and studies, due to its brilliant matte colors and portability. You may perhaps have even been curious enough to try it, only to discover how difficult it is to control. In this workshop, I will break down the unique quirks and characteristics of the medium, and explain why it’s so difficult to control. And then, I will show you exactly what you need to do to overcome these annoying obstacles so that we may tame the beast. We will get to know the medium by working indoors, in a controlled environment using photo references. This stuff is hard enough without the added challenge of painting en plein air. Once you understand the characteristics that makes gouache unique, it just may become your favorite sketching medium both indoors and out!
Watercolor; it’s ALL about the water!
In this workshop, we will focus on how it’s the water that makes our watercolor paintings HAPPEN—successfully…or (sometimes) not!
When you think about it, the paint that we use is somewhat compliant…we squeeze it out, and it will just stay right there. It’s the water (with the at times help of gravity) that makes it move, it’s the water that helps us to make clean, clear, consistent washes, graded or solid washes without streaks. It’s the water that forms the bead that we move along to get those washes. It’s the water that makes our values light, medium and dark. AND, very importantly, it’s the water IN the brush that allows us to paint wet into wet without getting blossoms. It’s the water that allows us to soften edges. It’s the regulation of water in the brush that lets us make those beautiful dry-brush marks where we need them. It’s the water that allows us to charge color into color. In all of these examples, the water plays a crucial part in making them work the way that we expect (hope) that they will…
We will concentrate on all of these aspects of how the water is what makes our paintings. On day one, we’ll do some exercises on how to get our washes clean and pristine, and then we’ll work through (paint-along style) a painting or two that will give us the opportunity to discuss, think about and then use the water in just the right way in each aspect of the paintings.
Another thing that water allows us to do is to create atmospheric paintings using the glazing technique of applying one wash over another (drying between each) to create the atmospheric conditions that we experience and see in nature. On day two we’ll work through, again paint-along style, a painting or two that uses the glazing technique to create atmosphere.
We’ll have a half hour for lunch, so it would be great to bring it with you. At lunch we can all chat and discuss any and all questions you may have about watercolor…

INSTALLATION PROPOSAL
The InsideOut is an alternative art space located on 21st and I in midtown Sacramento. Consisting of three bay windows, the space is an extension of a ground floor apartment at the Flop Haus, a structural zeitgeist in the community. Since the entire space is viewed from the street, site-specific installations and projects have the potential to be viewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The InsideOut promotes artistic collaboration, exploration and experimentation across a large spectrum of the art community.
Since The InsideOut is a not for profit art space, the focus will be on work that has no commercial viability. Artists retain all rights to their work and will receive an opportunity to experiment across disciplines, media, and personal boundaries in order to grow artistically and professionally. On the other hand, the public and greater community will have the chance to engage with art that takes risks, that looks at art for its possibilities not its conventions.
Eligibility
Local, regional, national and international artists working in any media over the age of 18 are eligible for application. However, since we cannot currently provide a stipend, consider costs associated with travel, food, installation expenses, etc. Modest living accommodations can be provided. The application process is free.

Short introduction and motivation for your project.
Project proposal: What ideas or issues are you interested in? What would you like to learn more about through your artistic investigation? Please provide no more than (5) images exploring your proposed visual ideas. These can be drawings, altered photos, video, etc. We encourage artists to take risks and to explore unfamiliar territory. Are there gaps in knowledge, of materials, of processes, or direction? Try to foresee possible issues and describe briefly how you will address them or use them to your advantage. Artists should also provide detailed information about how the work will be installed.
