The Los Angeles Review of Books is looking for a full-time Managing Editor. The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the editing, strategy, production, and distribution of the LARB Quarterly Journal; managing the LARB Books backlist; and collaborating with LARB staff, interns, and volunteers on the creation of literary events and community partnerships. Responsibilities of this position include the following:
Quarterly Journal:
Manage Quarterly Journal production calendar and staff
Lead editorial acquisitions and developmental editing
Act as main point-of-contact for all distribution needs
Supervise editorial interns and volunteers
LARB Site:
Work with editor-in-chief on coordinating quarterly editorial meetings with senior editors, section editors, staff
Consult on editorial strategy and vision for LARB projects
Research and oversee grant and award applications for LARB editorial projects
LARB Books:
Maintain backlist of LARB Books titles with distributor, including fulfilment and maintenance of titles on the LARB shop
Communicate with authors of LARB Books titles regarding royalties, fulfillment, course copies, and other communications as they arise.
Ideal candidates have a minimum of two years of experience with print magazine production and editorial management. They should also possess a strong interest in literature, publishing, and independent literary production; excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; and a proven ability to lead a small staff, mentor interns, and work effectively in a collaborative environment. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign preferred.
The Managing Editor reports directly to the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director and operates as part of LARB’s core staff. This position starts December 2021. While we are primarily working remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will eventually transition back to work in our Los Angeles office. Salary range $45,000 – 50,000, commensurate with experience.
