Managing Editor

The Los Angeles Review of Books is looking for a full-time Managing Editor. The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the editing, strategy, production, and distribution of the LARB Quarterly Journal; managing the LARB Books backlist; and collaborating with LARB staff, interns, and volunteers on the creation of literary events and community partnerships. Responsibilities of this position include the following:

Quarterly Journal:

Manage Quarterly Journal production calendar and staff
Lead editorial acquisitions and developmental editing
Act as main point-of-contact for all distribution needs
Supervise editorial interns and volunteers

LARB Site:

Work with editor-in-chief on coordinating quarterly editorial meetings with senior editors, section editors, staff
Consult on editorial strategy and vision for LARB projects
Research and oversee grant and award applications for LARB editorial projects

LARB Books:

Maintain backlist of LARB Books titles with distributor, including fulfilment and maintenance of titles on the LARB shop
Communicate with authors of LARB Books titles regarding royalties, fulfillment, course copies, and other communications as they arise.

Ideal candidates have a minimum of two years of experience with print magazine production and editorial management. They should also possess a strong interest in literature, publishing, and independent literary production; excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; and a proven ability to lead a small staff, mentor interns, and work effectively in a collaborative environment. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign preferred.

The Managing Editor reports directly to the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director and operates as part of LARB’s core staff. This position starts December 2021. While we are primarily working remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will eventually transition back to work in our Los Angeles office. Salary range $45,000 – 50,000, commensurate with experience.

Piano Teacher

Position Title:  Piano Teacher

Status: Part-time

 

Position Summary:         

Teach individual lessons to piano students at beginning through advanced levels from age 5 and beyond. Midyear progress reports are required along with participation in juries during the spring semester. Adjudicating on the weekly recital series is encouraged once per term. Sundays is a required teaching day with other days being more flexible. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:     

Teach non-college elementary, intermediate, and advanced piano students with an emphasis on basic technique and command of appropriate repertoire.

Evaluate students to determine appropriate skill level.

Recruit and maintain studio of non-college piano students.

Participate in activities such as, but not limited to, departmental student auditions, Friday Night Recital adjudication, juries, progress reports, concerts, workshops, class performances, and faculty meetings.

Cooperate with and encourage students to audition for chamber music chairperson as appropriate.

Assist students with recording sessions for auditions, competitions, etc.

Maintain lesson schedule.

Hold regular studio recitals.

Arrange performance opportunities for students, as appropriate. 

 

Education and/or Experience Requirements:      

Master degree or higher, or equivalent professional experience preferred with significant interest and experience in teaching piano.

Active performing/studio career preferred.

Ability to contribute to a positive, supportive team environment required.

Ability to work with a diverse student population required.

Good communication skills. 

 

Other skills and abilities required:

Attend school and departmental events.

Hold parent meetings/conferences to address student problems or issues.

Evaluate students as appropriate.

Perform administrative tasks associated with students’ attendance and performance records.

Technical Director

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

A Noise Within seeks a Technical Director to oversee the production operations for all ANW productions. The Technical Director is responsible for supervising all aspects of production construction, supervising all construction and running crews, working with the Production Manager and Costume Shop Manager to realize ANW’s productions, coordinating basic facilities maintenance, and contributing to a safe and equitable production environment. ANW operates with an annual budget (in normal times) of $3.6 million and produces a 7-show main stage season in addition to collaborating with partner organizations for residencies and performances (Noise Now), periodic stage readings, fundraising events, and educational programs. As with all staff, the Technical Director will also have a role in implementing and contributing to ANW’s Strategic Plan and Anti-Racism Action Plan.

Right now: Like all theaters, covid closed ANW in March 2020. We have launched our in-person 21-22 season and patrons and artists are thrilled to be back. Our TD will be involved with a team of staff members in continuing to plan for the health and safety of our artists, crews, and audiences.

Qualities and qualifications of a successful candidate:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a technical director, stage carpenter, or member of a production department
  • Broad understanding of all aspects of technical theatre
  • Experience overseeing production crews and either building scenery or working with external scene shops
  • Proficiency with industry software such as CAD programs and QLab
  • A theatrical rigging certification or equivalent
  • Experience reading ground plans, light plots, and other theatrical specifications and turning those plans into realized production elements on schedule and on budget
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and values, and to an anti-racist work culture.
  • Excellent communication skills including navigating technical and non-technical artistic conversations
  •  The ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous projects successfully and work effectively with artists, production teams, volunteers, and staff

Working conditions and physical demands:

  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work off the ground in a Genie lift or in catwalks
  • Ability to see in low-light conditions (such as a dark theater)

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Attend and advise on elements of production meetings

  • Coordinate notes that arise during production rehearsal/tech
  • Support Production Manager in staying on schedule and on budget for production projects
  • Work with directors and design teams to ensure timely completion of all designs
  • Supervise production personnel including electricians, carpenters, running crews, etc.
  • Oversee (with Production Manager) inventory and maintenance of all lighting, shop, costume, and sound equipment
  • Support productions with research on needs including video and projections, special effects, sourcing and researching materials and techniques, etc.
  • Establish and maintain a safe work environment at all times

COMPENSATION: The position is full time, exempt, salary is $60,000

Assistant Printing Coordinator

Job Title: Assistant Printing Coordinator 

Department: SCI-Arc Retail Center

Reports to: Retail Services Manager

FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-exempt

Summary:

The Assistant Printing Coordinator for the SCI-Arc print center fulfills all printing orders, replaces media on all printers and ensures all printers are operating properly. The Assistant Printing Coordinator keeps track of and inventory of all consumables. This is a Full-time position, initially starting 30 hours a week, with additional hours possible dependent on business need; not to exceed 40 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide customer Service – ring up sales, answer phones, assist customers, interact with students and the public
  • Assist customers with placing printing orders, answering any questions regarding their order
  • Print to all printers: HP T-2300, Oce ColorWave 500 and 650, and Canon IPF 8400
  • Maintain Inventory of all printer supplies and consumables
  • Open and close Print Center – move merchandise, displays, shelving
  • Obtain and evaluate all relevant information to handle inquiries, order and/or complaints
  • Operate cash register – prepare register for store opening and close out register at end of day
  • Responsibility with cash box
  • Maintain clean store environment – sweeping, dusting, taking out trash
  • Supervise student workers
  • Provide assistance in the store when available

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 – 2 years of experience in a retail environment (art/architecture retail experience preferred)

Director of Operations

BACKGROUND

Antaeus Theatre Company is an actor-driven theater company that explores and produces timely and timeless works, grounded in our passion for the Classics. We illuminate diverse human experiences through performance, training and outreach. We believe in the transformative power of live theater.

Antaeus is located at the Kiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Downtown Glendale, CA. The center includes an 80-seat theater, a reconfigurable 36-seat black box space, and a theater library. Antaeus is currently in the final year of implementing a three-year strategic plan to build out its infrastructure and create long-term financial sustainability.

CURRENT ENVIRONMENT

Antaeus operates with an annual budget of approximately $1 million. In March 2020, in response to COVID-19, Antaeus closed its building and subsequently postponed all in-person activities. We have shifted some programming online during this time and also produced a new audio play series, The Zip Code Plays: Los Angeles. The current staff of eight are working remotely.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Producing Executive Director, the Director of Operations holds a leadership position at Antaeus. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace the theater’s work, and convey it in their interactions with the community. This position works closely with the Artistic Director, other staff members, and members of our company and guest artists. They are responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Antaeus in order to achieve the organization’s mission and vision. The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing Finance; Human Resources; Production Operations including the stage management teams; Front of House Operations; Information Technology; and Outside Rentals.

Director of Development

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC) seeks an energetic, strategic, and experienced fundraising professional to join the organization as Director of Development and oversee all contributed revenue generation efforts. The Director of Development will be a key member of LACC’s senior leadership team and will devise, implement, and manage strategies to grow the number of funders, cultivate external relationships, and expand overall contributed revenue.

The Director of Development will report to and work closely with LACC’s Executive Director, manage the Chorus’s contract grant writer, and lead staff, Board, and volunteers in achieving ambitious fundraising goals in support of LACC’s music education and performance programs. An individual with great enthusiasm for LACC’s commitment to inspiring and changing lives through music will find the work of this position to be enormously rewarding.

Responsibilities:

Strategy Development

·       Provide strategic leadership in the planning, execution, and management of LACC’s development efforts, including individual giving, special events, corporate and foundation relations, capital initiatives, planned giving, in-kind giving, and other new initiatives.

·       Develop and execute annual and multi-year fundraising plans with specific, quantifiable goals across all contributed revenue streams.

·       Participate in long-range strategic planning and ongoing strategy development with key stakeholders, including the Artistic Director, Executive Director, and Board of Directors.

Donor Engagement

·       Serve as one of LACC’s primary external ambassadors; develop and maintain close relationships with LACC’s family of supporters, including the Board of Directors, individual donors, corporate sponsors, institutional funders, and community leaders, and new prospects in each category.

·       Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major individual donors and prospects, with an average of 4–6 donor visits each month.

Special Events

·       Oversee the planning, management, and execution of LACC’s annual spring fundraising gala in partnership with the Executive Director, Development Committee, and Gala Committee.

·       Conceptualize, plan, and run smaller cultivation, stewardship, and revenue-generating events throughout the year.

Corporate and Foundation Relations

·       Collaborate with LACC’s grant writer to identify new funding opportunities and secure significant foundation and governmental support.

·       Play a key role in managing relationships with existing institutional funders, including attending funder-organized events from time to time.

·       Build and steward relationships with corporate entities in a variety of sectors to secure monetary and in-kind support for programming and special events.

Communications

·       In concert with the Executive Director and Artistic Director, develop key messaging that is clear, comprehensive, and compelling in presenting an inspiring story about LACC’s mission, work, and dual commitments to artistic and educational excellence.

·       Collaborate effectively across the organization to ensure opportunities for strategic collaboration between fundraising initiatives and programmatic, marketing, and performance activities, in alignment with the broader organizational vision.

Other

·       Create and manage the development budget – set quarterly and annual goals, track progress, and oversee the creation of monthly reports for Executive Director and Development Committee.

·       Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors’ Development Committee; equip, mobilize, and support Directors as they fulfill their development responsibilities and play an integral role in the overall success of LACC’s fundraising efforts.

·       Oversee gift processing and acknowledgment processes, assuring timely correspondence, efficient internal systems, accurate record-keeping, fulfillment of funder benefits/recognition, and monthly reconciliation with LACC’s finance department.

·       Keep abreast of the latest research and trends in philanthropy, particularly those pertaining to the performing arts and music education.

·       Attend LACC performances; represent LACC at various civic, cultural, and other public events.

·       Other duties as determined by the Executive Director.


Required Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s Degree, and 5+ years progressively responsible experience in non-profit fundraising, preferably in the arts and culture sector.

·       Exceptional writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to speak persuasively about LACC’s mission and work.

·       Highly organized and systems-oriented with strengths in delegation, volunteer, and resource management.

·       Polished, personable, donor-centric demeanor in all communications.

·       Good sense of judgment, tact, and diplomacy.

·       A highly motivated self-starter, with the ability to work both collaboratively as part of a close-knit team and independently.

·       Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously with a keen attention to detail.

·       Adept computer skills, including fluency in MS Office, experience with SaaS software and customer relationship managements databases (LACC uses Patron Manager).

·       Passion for the performing arts, particularly classical music and music education.

·       Valid California Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.


Preferred Experience:

·       Experience devising, implementing, and managing individual and institutional fundraising efforts, including experience with all facets of the donor cycle – from prospecting through to post-giving stewardship.

·       Experience managing a portfolio of major individual donors, with a demonstrable track record of successfully soliciting five- and six-figure gifts.

·       Event planning experience, including interfacing with vendors and negotiating contracts.

·       Knowledge of the Los Angeles philanthropic community.


Position:

The Director of Development is a full-time, exempt position that will be based at LACC’s office in Pasadena. In addition to a hybrid in-office/from-home schedule with regular business hours Monday–Friday, some weekend and evening hours throughout the year will be required for performances, meetings, and other events.


Compensation:
Salary range for this position is $90,000 – $105,000, depending on experience. Compensation package includes 100% employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance and generous paid time off.

About Los Angeles Children’s Chorus

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC), widely recognized as one of the world’s preeminent youth choruses, has been lauded as “hauntingly beautiful” (Los Angeles Times), “the best children’s chorus I have ever heard” (Esa-Pekka Salonen), and “one of the true artistic gems of Los Angeles” (Gustavo Dudamel).
