OPEN CALL FOR “Symbionts: Organisms living in symbiosis”

Side Street Projects (SSP) is requesting proposals for our upcoming 2022-23 Artist Residencies program titled Symbionts: Organisms living in symbiosis. SSP will offer residencies for (2) artists or collectives to develop a community-engaged art project with the clear intention of interdependent multigenerational engagement and sanctuary in the community of Pasadena. The residency will take place between November 2022 and June 2023 based on the availability of applicants.

About the theme: Symbionts: Organisms living in symbiosis

(Symbiosis: Long-term mutually beneficial interaction between organisms where “long-term” is defined in generations.)

Artists will develop projects with the clear intention of interdependent multigenerational engagement and sanctuary in the community of Pasadena.

These goals have been brought to us by our neighbors in NW Pasadena who have asked us to create peaceful spaces in our community through hands-on artmaking and healing opportunities.

SSP will offer an honoraria of $2,250 per artist or collective and a materials budget of approximately $500. We will also offer professional development by access to space, tools, and staff support through the facilitation, marketing, and execution of the projects. Each artist will be given a staff time budget, based on the individual needs of their residency.

We work through the lens of DIY(do-it-yourself)/DIT(do-it-together) values, including using resources respectfully with a (re)generative and symbiotic relationship to the environment and the communities they come from.

Director of Production

Cal Performances is seeking a Director of Production. 

Cal Performances is the performing arts presenting, commissioning, and producing organization based at the University of California, Berkeley. The mission of Cal Performances is to produce and present performances of the highest artistic quality, enhanced by programs that explore compelling intersections of education and the performing arts. The organization delivers a diverse artistic and educational mission to the University and surrounding communities, as well as internationally through its digital platforms. The organization delivers roughly 350 events per year, maintaining a budget size of roughly $18M and roughly 65 career staff with hundreds of part-time employees, volunteers, third-party partners, and students.

This leadership position is responsible for the implementation of technical elements for Cal Performances events and other University and third-party events staged in the Zellerbach Auditorium, Zellerbach Playhouse, Hertz Hall, Wheeler Auditorium, Hearst Greek Theater, and other off-campus venues, as necessary.

The Director of Production is responsible for our theaters’ technical assets and for leading our production technical departments and contractors, including set/carpentry, lighting, sound, wardrobe, and makeup. Working with a team of 15 career production staff and dozens of occasional production staff, the Director of Production is responsible for leading the advanced production preparations. The Director of Production oversees and manages all stage needs related to the production of each event including stage equipment, staffing levels, advance work, and touring artist requirements. This position works closely with the Director of Artistic Planning and Rental Business Manager, as well as other leaders, in the planning and budgeting of all production considerations. Due to the nature of this work, this position’s schedule includes extensive on-site evening and weekend hours.

Position Purpose:

American Conservatory Theater seeks a General Management Associate to join the General Management department in serving the production and operational needs of the organization. The General Management Associate is a full-time, exempt position that works closely with the General Manager and Company Manager to oversee all aspects of producing a season of plays as well as workshops and readings. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who loves being around artists and has strong organizational skills to support a dynamic, artistic organization. The position requires a flexible disposition, discretion, the ability to remain level-headed in stressful situations, and an ability to make decisions in accordance with established procedures. This position also plays a significant role interacting regularly with all departments to support A.C.T.’s programs and initiatives.

 

Responsibilities: (please note, this list is not exhaustive, but rather a representation of job duties)

Administrative Duties:

Support the General Manager withPreparing, processing, monitoring and administering artist contracts.
Tracking of production budgets including reporting and tracking actual expenses.
Reviewing box office settlements and preparing royalty reports.
Managing clearance for use of music used in productions.
Review and process bi-weekly IATSE crew payroll.
Support the onboarding of artists, including setting them up in A.C.T.’s Payroll system, Paycom, and Bill.com for independent contractors.
Facilitate payments and reimbursements to artists and vendors according to internal procedures
Facilitate union benefits preparation and distribution.
Create agendas for meetings and provide project management support on General Management projects. Take minutes for larger General Management led meetings such as show kickoffs and debriefs.
Track the status of interdepartmental projects and follow up on requests for information.
Create and maintain a process of artist billing. Communicate the artist billing requirements to A.C.T.’s Marketing Department for each project. Provide copy-editing support for A.C.T. publications to ensure they follow contractual requirements.
Attend the weekly New Works meeting and provide General Management support for developmental projects.
Provide administrative support for rehearsals and activities in studios.
Support the General Manager on other projects as needed.
Logistical and Artist Support Duties:

Serve as substitute Company Manager when needed, including providing after hours support for visiting guest artists
Support the Company Manager with setting up company housing and transportation for all visiting artists and traveling staff, including hotel/apartment accommodations, flights, shuttle and taxi service, shipping needs, pet requirements, etc. General Management Associate will also assist the Company Manager in responding to needs of artists in residence including both during normal business hours and nights and weekends.
Support the Company Manager with the management of ticket policies for every production. This includes house seats, opening night tickets, complimentary tickets, and production seats during previews.
Support the Company Manager with the planning and execution of company events including, but not limited to, Meet and Greets, Opening Night Parties, Company Meetings, and Closing Moments
In partnership with the General Management team, work to uphold A.C.T.’s commitments to being an anti-racist, welcoming, and inclusive organization as we are the first and major presence for guest artists.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be an extremely organized individual who is able to work with a high degree of independence and to set and meet priorities while handling multiple tasks.
Ability to collaborate and communicate well with others and has the ability to think on their feet.
The ideal candidate will lean on their empathy, patience, and sense of humor as they navigate the needs of each individual production.
Openness to learning and development as the department consistently strives to improve our practices
2-4 years of work experience either in Arts Administration, Hospitality or other artist facing positions at a performing arts institution or other live entertainment venue.
Demonstrate incredible attention to detail, the ability to creatively problem solve, and a desire to grow in the field of theatrical management.
Experience with Collective Bargaining Agreements. A working knowledge of LORT’s Collective Bargaining Agreements is beneficial.
Experience with Tessitura Ticketing Software, Paycom, and Bill.com is a plus.
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with A.C.T. colleagues and stakeholders.
Required/Minimum Qualifications or Basic Qualifications:

Evening and weekend work required based on show needs
Valid driver’s license
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs consistently
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Experience managing relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds; comfort engaging frequently with new people

Position Overview:
The Digital Content Manager (“Manager”) will be responsible for P.S. ARTS’ online presence, including web content and social media, as well as other digital projects. The Manager will produce regular, high-quality multichannel content that reflects P.S. ARTS’ mission, advances organizational goals, and aligns with the P.S. ARTS brand.

The Manager’s goal is to execute strategies and develop metrics that enhance P.S. ARTS’ digital presence with content and deliverables that inspire, influence, and inform P.S. ARTS’ audiences.

The Manager will also work cross-department to oversee video production for the organization by facilitating the execution and creation of video projects including, but not limited to, ideation, filming, onsite support, and video editing.

The Manager’s primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Promote P.S ARTS’ mission, programs, and events across all digital strategies;
  • Manage P.S. ARTS’ web content strategy;
  • Conceptualize and execute social media campaigns;
  • Collect, edit and manage all digital assets (content, images, video, etc.)to ensure quality, brand consistency and alignment with P.S. ARTS’ mission/objectives;
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for content creation;
  • Establish effective and measurable goals to increase P.S. ARTS’ audience base and build a loyal following across all platforms;
  • Monitor, interpret, and communicate metrics, content performance, and online engagement;
    Increase digital accessibility to website and web content; and
    Oversee and support the production of video projects (filming, editing, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in digital marketing and social media management.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in photo/video editing and production.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to produce original content.
  • Excellent organizational abilities, including ability to prioritize deadlines and assignments.
  • Fluency across a variety of creative-based software i.e., iMovie, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva etc.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Lift, push, pull or carry supplies, equipment, instruments or classroom furniture up-to 40lbs.
  • Bend, twist, reach, stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
  • View LCD screens for long periods of time.
  • Potential work with video equipment and a comfort with recording and/or being recorded.
  • Travel and attend meetings and events outside of your worksite, which may require occasional use of a motor vehicle for transportation to other locations. Due to responsibilities requiring travel to locations not easily accessible by public transportation, driving may be an essential job responsibility for this position. Over the past 80 years, this prestigious show has included many premier names in American and California art, including Robert Arneson, Elmer Bischoff, Fred Dalkey, David Gilhooly, Ralph Goings, Gregory Kondos, Roland Petersen, Mel Ramos, Ruth Rippon, and Wayne Thiebaud. Works selected by this year’s juror, Emma Saperstein, Chief Curator and Director of Education at SLOMA, will be on display in all 4 galleries at Blue Line Arts.
