CALL FOR ART: MURALS OF LIVE OAK 2023
Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture (YSAC) is seeking artists to create murals in the City of Live Oak as part of the Murals of Live Oak project. The initial murals of this multi-year project were created in 2017.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
YSAC works closely with businesses, government, educators, and other arts organizations within the Yuba-Sutter community to advocate for the arts which includes promoting arts programming, promoting arts opportunities for artists and audiences, increasing the visibility of the arts throughout the region, and educating the community on the benefits and enjoyment of the arts.
YSAC’s past activities have reflected the region’s broad demographic diversity and it remains a key catalyst for increasing cultural exchange and understanding. Through grant funds awarded by the City of Live Oak, where the murals will be created, and matching funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, YSAC will increase its reach into the Live Oak community to further its vision. Please read the instructions for submission guidelines below and submit your proposals by September 15, 2023.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
· Location(s): Various – Base your concepts and/or renderings on a 15’x30’ wall.
· Project Intent/Theme: Must follow themes established by City of Live Oak Mural Project Committee. The general themes are as follows:
o Live Oak’s natural beauty including Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, the Feather River, and the Sutter Buttes
o Native American heritage including native American design motifs or portraits from the Maidu photographs of Edward S. Curtis. (http://curtis.library.northwestern.edu/curtis/toc.cgi Volume 14).
o Live Oak’s early agricultural settlement, history, and ethnic diversity
· Additional Requirements
o All murals must incorporate the presence of an oak tree or oak trees in some form either small or large. All murals must also incorporate a hidden object which may or may not be related to the general theme of the overall mural.
o All murals, whether hand brushed or sprayed, must be created using weather-resistant media and incorporate dynamic use of color and visual impact. A final anti-graffiti coating must be applied as well.
· Open to: Competition is open to all artists.
· Artist Budget: Artists should provide the cost for their mural design based on a 15×30 wall which should include artist labor, supplies and equipment needed to execute the mural. The final amount will be determined once final mural locations and sizes are determined. The artist is responsible for the design and installation of the mural.
· Integration/Original Artwork: Artists submitting artwork for consideration will assure the following:
o The artwork is solely the result of the artistic effort of the artist.
o An original artwork design that considers the site, its purpose, and visitors. The design will be community focused, with a unique eye on creating a community sense of self through art.
o Artwork must have qualities considered to be pleasant, uplifting, and inspirational; reflective of the themes established by the City of Live Oak and illustrated with visual interest, inventiveness, and uniqueness.
· Selection Process: The judging and selection of submissions will be conducted by a committee appointed by the City of Live Oak and YSAC which will include building owners. All decisions will be final. The selected artist(s) will be notified by telephone or e-mail. Public announcement of the selections will be posted by the City of Live Oak and on the YSAC website (yubasutterarts.org) and shared with local and statewide press contacts.
· Selection Deadline: September 15, 2023
· Selection Announcement: September 29, 2023
· Installation of Murals Deadline: December 31, 2023
· Application Process:
o Complete “Murals of Live Oak Project Entry Form”
o Submit up to three (3) mural submissions (original drawings or digital images are acceptable).
o Submissions may be mailed or dropped off at the Yuba Sutter Arts mailbox at 624 E Street, Marysville, CA 95901, attention David Read, or emailed to david@yubasutterarts.org, subject “Murals of Live Oak.”
