Shades of Purple 2021 | International Online Juried Painting Competition

Open to all artists 18 years and older.  All painting mediums allowed including drawing mediums and digital painting. (For this competition, digital and drawing mediums are categorized as a “painting”.) Artwork may be ANY STYLE OR SUBJECT MATTER that contains PURPLE or any shade of PURPLE preferable as a prominent or secondary color.

This is a competition, only the award recipients will be in the online group exhibition. The selection of artwork will be chosen by Jury based on the number of entries, technical skill, quality of work, originality and the criteria for this event.  Please allow up to 3 weeks after the deadline for review and preparation for the online show.

Curator / Designer / Preparator

CO’S Art Haus focuses on creating a welcoming, friendly environment for first-time art buyers and seasoned collectors, sharing the lifelong joy of collecting art. We are currently looking for a Curator / Designer / Preparator to join our small-but-mighty team of art lovers. This will be a multi-faceted job: we’re looking for a jack-of-all-trades.

The job will encompass exhibition design, graphic design, email marketing, collections management, artwork deliveries, client relationship management, and closing high-ticket sales. Sales are the cornerstone of our business.

The Art Haus is currently expanding our successful gallery model. The ideal candidate will have a relevant passion to apply to our team, and help us grow our business. Are you a total people-person? Do you dream in design? Are you a go-getter?

All applicants must currently reside in the (South) Bay Area, and be comfortable regularly commuting to Los Gatos. (We have parking! A whole lot, in fact.) Unfortunately, out-of-town applicants will not be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Close high-ticket sales, in-gallery and via text / email follow-ups
Provide graphic design for print and digital marketing
Take the lead in the planning, design, physical installation, and de-installation of art exhibits
Oversee collection security, ensuring proper storage of art objects
Deliver artwork safely to clients, often renting / driving a UHAUL truck for larger paintings. This is generally a fun, friendly interaction that may involve on-site installation and closing a high-ticket sale.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned (and as your skillset / personal drive requires!)

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Proficiency in basic computing, including Microsoft Office Suite and digital inventory maintenance
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suites
Experience with mass email marketing (we use Mailchimp)
Able to physically install artwork: Comfort with a drill, a ladder, and a good old-fashioned hammer.
Available to work extended hours during exhibition prep and close
Available to staff and sell at the gallery on rotation, including select evenings and weekends. Weekend availability is mandatory.
Ability to work independently and efficiently within tight deadlines
Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic
Ability to package artwork for shipping/delivery
Record maintenance skills (detail-oriented)
An independently motivated go-getter with the ability to manage artwork sales and deliveries with business acumen

COMPENSATION:
Part-time position (approximately 25 – 35 hours weekly), with the possibility to grow into full-time
Flexible for the right person (who is certainly worth waiting for!)

Collage as Street Art: Letting the Art Find Its Own Audience

A four-week, virtual/online residency with Kolaj Institute in July 2021

In this 4-week, project-driven collage residency, artists will delve into the history, methods and major artists of the “street art” movement with a particular emphasis on collage. Participants will endeavor to put some of those methods into practice, taking their collage art out into the streets. Documenting the entire process will be integral to the project, as the resulting work will be published in a Kolaj Street Krewe book to be announced at a later date.

Leading the residency is Lance Rothstein, aka FANCLUB 13, who has been creating street art for over 20 years in over 25 US cities and 31 European cities. Rothstein writes, “I consider my work to be a bit like archaeology, collecting the discarded items from people’s everyday lives and rearranging them in new relationships. Then I usually send them back out to the streets in this new form, with a new purpose. I look forward to continuing my personal scavenger hunt, finding little trashy treasures and combining them into intricate relationships for people to come across on the streets.”

Each week, collage artists will join in an online session where we’ll highlight the work and methods of several established artists. We’ll discuss new techniques and strategies, with topics such as Placement, Materials, Visibility, Message, and Legality. Each week, we will challenge participants to get their work out onto the streets, document the process, and share it with the group the following week for discussion and critique. During the residency, at least one additional guest Street Artist will discuss their methods and experiences with the group.

Some of the concepts addressed during the residency include: What is Collage and what isn’t Collage? What are your artistic goals? How can Street Art add to your artistic process? Who is your audience? How/Why/Where should it be seen? Where should you put it to achieve the audience you want? Do you want to remain anonymous? How is this affecting your own consideration of the artworks? How does Street Art differ from more traditional forms of art exhibition? Letting go of your artwork and letting the artwork find its own audience.

WHO IS THIS FOR?
Collage Artist Residencies are intended for self-motivated artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop their practice by exploring a topic or working method and collaborating with others to produce a final product. Residencies are open to any artist over the age of 21 from anywhere in the world.

COST
The cost of the residency is $350 per artist; however, no artist will be turned away for lack of funds and the organizers will work with artists to build a financial aid package.

WORKSHOP LOGISTICS
Dates: July 1 – July 31, 2021

Over the course of four weeks, artists will participate in online meetings and complete independent assignments. Sessions are one hour to an hour-and-a-half long and include slideshows, artist presentations, and discussions. Artists are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and complete assignments. Artists will be tasked with creating and documenting their own street art. By participating in the residency, artists grant Kolaj Institute, Kolaj Magazine, and Maison Kasini permission to publish the images in book form and in the promotion of the project and book. Any original collages made during the residency remain the property of the individual artists with all rights retained.

Resilient & Creative: A National Juried Exhibition

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center invites artists to apply for a national juried art exhibition that celebrates innovative artistic responses in the face of unexpected obstacles.

Any experienced artist can attest that creative practice is a source of real challenge and frustration at times – and that’s not always a bad thing! Whether we’re scrambling to balance art-making with other responsibilities, striving to translate an imagined idea into a physical reality, or struggling with a new technique that isn’t working as anticipated, unforeseen difficulties can function as a creative catalyst, pushing artists to try new things and take risks that we might not have considered before.

This exhibition invites artists to reflect on the unplanned challenges (pandemic-related or not!) that have inspired their own creativity. Selected works will be exhibited from August 14 – September 26, 2021, in the historic Esther Webster Gallery in Port Angeles, WA. $15 entry fee for up to 3 pieces.

THEME
We were all affected in different ways by the day’s events of September 11, 2001. Incomprehensible destruction and loss of innocent life unfolding before our eyes. It was a day that shifted our future in more ways than we could have imagined. As we come upon its 2o year anniversary, we seek art inspired by the events of that day, its aftermath, and all the layers in between. Show us Remembering from your perspective.

ENTRY FEE

ELIGIBILITY
This call is open to artists worldwide, both amateur and professional. All fine art media will be considered except film.

RULES
Work that is copied or done under the guidance of an instructor is not eligible. Please submit only work that will be available at the time of the exhibit and will remain for its entirety. If the work does not fully reflect what is represented on the jpeg the Cultural Center reserves the right to eliminate it from the exhibition.

FRAMING
Framed work must be fitted firmly in frame with wire for hanging. No loose glass over mats. Gallery wrapped canvases are permitted. Poorly presented work will not be hung.

ARTWORK DELIVERY
Shipping, return shipping and a handling fees are the responsibility of the artist. Delivery instructions will accompany email notification of acceptance. Purchase of return shipping labels is the responsibility of the artist. All artwork must arrive by the scheduled receiving date.

JUROR
Director’s choice. Please note, there is no personal feedback given by jurors.

NOTIFICATION

FORMATTING

SALES
All works should be for sale. Members of the Cultural Center are charged a 30% commission on all sales, non-members a 40% commission.
