One of the longest established contemporary art galleries on the West Coast, L.A. Louver seeks a full-time Gallery Archivist to lead its extensive and active archive, which is distinguished by collections and materials that reflect the gallery’s activities since its founding in 1975.
This is a unique opportunity for an archivist with demonstrated professional experience in art archives or libraries to manage extensive daily operations and tasks, oversee structure and ongoing organization, lead initiatives, and set policy.
The position requires excellent organizational, analytical and research skills, exceptional literacy, a comprehensive interest in contemporary art and art history, and high proficiency in digital imaging and Web technologies. The Gallery Archivist must be able to work independently and collaboratively, and have superb communication and interpersonal skills.
The Gallery Archivist role includes the following areas of responsibility:
ARCHIVE
· Manage and care for historical and special collections
· Receive and process contemporary digital and print materials into collections, including gallery business records and correspondence; newspapers, art magazines and periodicals; books; ephemera
· Respond to research inquiries utilizing archive and library assets as resources, including sales-related requests, directors’ requests, and requests from external researchers
· Manage archive workflow between two locations: Los Angeles warehouse and Venice Beach gallery
· Train and oversee archive interns
· Implement special research, media and curatorial projects
LIBRARY
· Manage and care for two libraries: an artist-focused Artist Library and General Arts Library
· Order books of interest related to gallery artists or gallery research interests
· Ensure receipt and proper processing of all new publications into library collections in a timely manner
· Circulate and route books to gallery directors and staff, as needed
SALEABLE CATALOGUE AND MERCHANDISE INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
· Work with gallery receptionist to maintain publication inventory at gallery, coordinating between warehouse, gallery, and offsite storage
· Work with gallery receptionist and webmaster, manage Shopify e-commerce page on website ensuring item availability, price revisions, and addition of new inventory materials and descriptions
ARTIST-RELATED UPKEEP AND MANAGEMENT
· Maintain artist CVs, biographies, and statements
· Field press related to artists daily (digital and print), saving in and to appropriate format(s) and repositories, and integrating into gallery communications as needed
· Exhibition updates: liaise with webmaster for website updates and circulate to team and directors
· Request and maintain images, installation photography, checklists, and press releases for artists’ exhibitions elsewhere for archive
ARTWORK INVENTORY RECORD MANAGEMENT
· Provenance/literature/exhibition history management in artwork database records in coordination with registrar and gallery directors including works in current exhibitions, on loan, as well as updates reflecting newly discovered historical data
IMAGE REPRODUCTION REQUESTS MANAGEMENT
· Receive and process all image reproduction requests according to set protocols for each artist/estate/collection, liaising with directors and artists
· Provide concise image captions and credit lines
· Source and provide high-resolution images
· Track publications to ensure receipt of courtesy copies and forwarding copies to artists/studios/estates
· Meticulously document and track image requests / forthcoming publications
QUALIFICATIONS
· Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, with an art history background, is preferred
· Two or more years of experience in an archive or art library environment
· Must be able to lift 50 pounds
· Skills: File Maker Pro, Adobe Photoshop/Acrobat
DETAILS
This is a full-time (Monday-Friday), salaried staff position with benefits, including medical and dental insurance, paid vacation and sick leave.
The Gallery Archivist will be primarly based at L.A. Louver’s warehouse and archive facility located in Mid-City Los Angeles, but will also work out of the Venice Beach gallery as projects and responsibilities require.

One of the longest established contemporary art galleries on the West Coast, L.A. Louver is seeking an Intern to lend general support to its team this summer.
This is an ideal role for a student or recent graduate who is interested in an entry-level or early career opportunity to learn more about overall art gallery operations. Candidates must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented and thorough by nature, and possess excellent judgment.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Intern to assist on a number of different fronts:
– Front desk duties – answering phones, greeting and receiving visitors and vendors
– Basic administrative functions
– Database and contact maintenance
– Organizational projects
– Event support – managing RSVPs, vendor coordination, general day-of assistance
Candidates with particular interests or skills could also be called on to assist in the following areas:
– Writing & social media
– Research & archive
– Sales support
– Photography, videography and digital asset management
The preferred term of the internship is May – August 2022. The rate of pay is $16 per hour. Hours will not exceed 28 per week. However, the exact schedule and duration of the Summer Internship will be subject to the needs of the gallery and the candidate’s availability.

GALLERY REGISTRAR
One of the longest established contemporary art galleries on the West Coast, L.A. Louver is seeking a full-time Registrar to join our team. Our ideal candidate will have two to five years of experience with a fine art gallery, shipping company, or arts institution, and an excellent understanding of professional best practices.
The Registrar will need to be a strong team player, working closely with the Assistant Registrar, Lead Preparator, and Operations Manager to organize shipping, framing, and conservation; maintain and update the inventory database; and liaise with gallery colleagues, artists, clients, and vendors.
This colleague must be extremely detail oriented by nature, a clear and gracious communicator, capable of working well under deadline pressures, and have good professional judgment.
Responsibilities may include:
· Initiate and monitor incoming and outgoing shipments (both domestic and international), communicating with shipping vendors to obtain estimates and manage pickup, transportation, and endpoint delivery of artworks.
· Track and manage artwork movements, consignments, and loan agreements
· Ensure artwork inventory database records remain correct and updated, prioritizing artwork details, images, location, condition, framing and production costs, as well as provenance and exhibition history entries, working closely with Archive.
· Assist with general collections management, including condition reporting, cataloguing, and tracking of artworks across multiple locations, including on- and off-site storage, artist studios and exhibition loans
· Oversee basic art handling and preparation duties; assist as needed with packing and unpacking, installation
Desired Skills and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree in related discipline preferred
· Minimum two years registration and/or collections management experience in a gallery or art institution
· Proficiency and experience with art inventory / collections management database (familiarity with ArtBase is ideal)
· Proficiency with Mac OS X environment, MS Office Suite; Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Acrobat Pro) a plus
· Knowledge of art handling, art storage, and transportation best practices
· Must be able to lift 30+ lbs
· Must have valid CA driver’s license, as position may require working out of multiple locations

Small Works is a national juried show of artwork no more than 24” in its largest dimension (including frame). All media are eligible except jewelry, film/video. All entries are judged from digital files. One $30 nonrefundable fee entitles each artist to submit up to three entries. Purchase awards may be available for accepted work. Accepted artists may be selected for a solo show at Harper College. A color catalog will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
