Education Programs Associate, BAYAC AmeriCorps
Are you excited to work with youth to develop their writing skills? Are you eager to give back to your community and learn about nonprofits? This opportunity is an 11-month, full-time AmeriCorps service position (40+ hours/week), through the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium (BAYAC), a program of Bay Area Community Resources (BACR). We’re hiring 12 AmeriCorps members to support various 826 Valencia programs starting mid-August 2023, and we’re keen to attract programs associates with Spanish-language skills.
AmeriCorps members will work closely with 826 Valencia staff, volunteers, and youth to support students and amplify their voices as published authors. The ideal candidates love working with youth, believe that every young person can achieve at the highest level, and will do their best to provide necessary support. We are looking for candidates who are committed to service and can persevere through challenges in pursuit of improved outcomes for the students we serve.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Programs Associate reports to a Programs Manager or Programs Director, depending on the team
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
*Tutor and mentor students in order to improve their writing skills, confidence, and pride; maintain student safety through positive behavior management
*Build relationships with volunteer tutors and provide ongoing guidance and feedback on their tutoring practice; escalate situations to the attention of 826 Valencia staff as needed
*Curate and copyedit student writing using 826 Valencia style guides; consistently honor student voice
*Track student and volunteer data in Salesforce, including attendance and program hours; track hours in the AmeriCorps system and follow BAYAC protocols
*Actively participate in 826 Valencia meetings, performance appraisal systems, and other work events to develop professional skills, gain a well-rounded experience of nonprofit work, and contribute to organization-wide initiatives
*Attend BAYAC AmeriCorps Team Days 2-3 times a month, plus all other required professional development BAYAC activities including Days of Service with regional cohort of youth educators
*Complete an optional learning project on an area of interest that meets an organizational need and/or participate in an optional 826 Valencia diversity, equity and inclusion committee
*Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
*High school diploma or equivalent (bachelor’s degree preferred)
*Prior work or volunteer experience with youth from under-resourced communities (preferred)
*Able to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols while in Writing Centers, schools sites, or at work events. Able to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, including all available booster doses, or participate in an interactive process for accommodations
*Able to complete the BAYAC application, a background check and Tuberculosis screening, and provide documentation of status as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident. We will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records, but cannot host any service member with a record that includes a conviction of a serious or violent felony, sexual offense, or controlled substance offense
*Facility with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Zoom (preferred)
*Any fluency level in spoken and/or written Spanish, Chinese, or Arabic (preferred)
*Familiarity or ties with the communities that 826 Valencia serves, for example, as a student who has participated in our programs or graduated from an SFUSD school, or was an English-language learner (preferred)

OTHER DETAILS
This 11-month AmeriCorps service position lasts from August 18, 2023, to July 15, 2024, through the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium (BAYAC). Programs Associates are not 826 Valencia employees and they serve on a full-time basis (40+ hours per week, Monday to Friday), with some evening or weekend hours. Schedules vary depending on the specific role. Programs Associates are based out of one of our three Writing Centers in San Francisco, some roles with substantial time at various school sites. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, and be able to work in an open-office environment where there may be substantial ambient noise and overheard conversations.

Education Programs Coordinator – 826 Valencia Mission Bay Center
The Programs Coordinator is a dynamic instructor, responsible for coordinating our programs with our partner elementary schools in the southeast corridor of the city. The core of our work is direct service and this position will lead programming for approximately 10-14 hours per week at Dr. Charles R. Drew College Preparatory Academy and other Mission Bay programs as needed. The ideal candidate is excited to work closely with teachers and school partners, loves to teach, is energized by working with youth in grades 3-5, and enjoys collaborating with team members to plan and execute impactful student programming.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Programs Coordinator reports to the Mission Bay Programs Supervisor.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Programs Coordination and Support
- Coordinate the writing program for grades 3-5 at Dr. Charles R. Drew College Preparatory Academy during the school day and after school; support programs at other partner schools (Starr King, Malcolm X, and Bret Harte) in the Bayview and Potrero Hill neighborhoods
- In collaboration with the Programs Manager, write engaging, standards-based, culturally-responsive curriculum
Participate in planning meetings with teachers to align lessons, collaborate to ensure students’ success, and identify opportunities for family engagement; communicate with teacher partners and caregivers in a timely, responsive, and effective manner; provide translation when applicable - In collaboration with the Programs Manager and Programs Director, determine program priorities and track progress towards goals and objectives; evaluate program effectiveness to develop improved methods for program delivery
Coordinate and support the activities of interns, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members; recruit, train, support, engage, and celebrate tutors to promote continued engagement and improved effectiveness - Track student and volunteer data using Salesforce and the Contract Management System of the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Families; support grant reporting and program evaluation as needed
- Support and/or coordinate student publications and related release parties;duties may include transcription, translation, copyediting, and event logistics
- Provide support to other 826 Valencia programs as needed, including occasional evening events
- Serve as instructor for summer programming
- Support other 826 Valencia programs as needed
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in staff and departmental meetings, internal committees on diversity, equity and inclusion, the annual 826 National conference, anti-racism trainings, other professional development activities, and performance appraisal systems
- Proactively raise issues with the Supervisor to prioritize tasks and implement solutions; meet all deadlines and maintain accurate timesheets
- Work collaboratively with all staff members to ensure robust programming
- All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Supervisor
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of two years working with under-resourced youth (preferred)
- Fully bilingual in English and either Spanish Arabic, or Chinese languages (preferred)
- Facility with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, and macOS
- Able to regularly travel to various school locations within six miles from the Mission Bay Center
- Able to complete a background check and Tuberculosis screening. This non-exempt, salaried, full-time role (40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) is based at the Mission Bay Center, 1310 4th St., San Francisco, with substantial time at various elementary schools in the Bayview and Potrero Hill neighborhoods (Dr. Charles R. Drew College Preparatory Academy, Starr King Elementary, Bret Harte Elementary, and Malcolm X Academy). The work schedule is subject to change based on programmatic needs, and working some evenings and weekends may be required. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, and able to work in an open-office environment where there may be substantial ambient noise and overheard conversations.
COMPENSATION
- $50,000 to $55,000 annual salary
- Paid Time Off: 15 Vacation days per year (increases to 20 days after two years), 9 wellness days per year, 13 holidays, and winter office closure. Additional COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave available through September 30, 2022
