The mission of the Japanese American National Museum it to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. The Japanese American National Museum is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry.
The Getty Marrow Media Arts Intern will work in the Watase Media Arts Center (MAC), which is dedicated to furthering JANM’s mission through unique documentaries, innovative exhibition components, video life histories that preserve and share the Japanese American experience, and social media posts. Intern will participate in the post-production (editing) phase of making media components for the museum’s upcoming exhibitions and programs (70% time), create social media posts (15% time), and log newly restored archival footage (15% time).
Highlighting the internship will be the opportunity to work on two upcoming exhibitions. In late 2021, JANM will open Sutra and Bible: Faith and Japanese American World War Two Incarceration. This exhibition will explore the important role that religious institutions and individuals played in providing a sense of security and stability for Japanese Americans during World War II. Using iconic religious objects and moving stories, this exhibit takes the visitor through the ways that religion played an important role in reestablishing a sense of community, offering comfort, and bringing people together in a time of war. Additionally, JANM will present Women’s Voices in late 2021. Through artifacts, artworks, oral histories, videos and sound clips from JANM’s collections, Women’s Voices will highlight lesser-known stories and add further context around the experiences of Japanese American women over several generations. Depending on project need, the intern may serve as assistant editor, editor, and/or interview transcriber.
To bolster JANM’s web presence, the intern will spend a portion of her/his time collaborating with our Marketing and Collections teams to create original social media posts that promote content from the JANM archives. The intern will log and describe archival home movie footage, which has been recently restored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Additionally, the intern will lead a digital final project of her/his own design, making use of web technology to tell a story that is relevant to JANM’s mission. It will be released through JANM’s YouTube channel and other social media outlets.
