With support from the California Arts Council, Yucca Valley Material Lab (YVML) will implement Yucca Experimental: Hi-Desert CoLab for Artists & Mentors. Yucca Experimental is an artist-in-residence program that will support up to four experienced yet underrepresented CA-based artists and musicians to explore new materials while they in turn engage, educate and collaborate with our community. YVML will provide instruction, lodging and a stipend, and the artist-in-residence will be paid for a community engagement component including teaching a workshop, mentoring an emerging artist, or presenting their work. The mentoring and workshop program will be designed to build workforce development to create new pathways toward higher education and job training.
Established in 2019, Yucca Valley Material Lab (YVML) is an artist-founded nonprofit arts organization in the rural Morongo Basin supporting hands-on making, material exploration, artist development, accessibility, and public cultural exchange. YVML operates as a material lab, residency program, workshop space, music initiative, exhibition site, and public learning environment.
YVML’s core programs include funded artist and musician residencies, public workshops, free events, youth arts learning, Lazy Eye Gallery, Yucca Alta, and a multi-sensory art and craft library with archive and tool resources. Workshops specialize in techniques often missing from traditional arts education, including glass, metal, fiber, wood, neon, sound, digital fabrication, adobe, and related material practices. In a typical year, YVML offers approximately 40 workshops, 15 free public events, 6 music performances, 2 musician residencies, 2 Yucca Alta recording projects, and youth workshops serving approximately 300 students. Adult workshops serve approximately 320 students annually, and total annual participation reaches approximately 1,120 people.
YVML supports artists through funded residencies that include lodging, studio access, technical mentorship, public presentations, and opportunities to explore unfamiliar materials and practices. Yucca Alta, YVML’s music program, recording studio, and record label, supports experimental musicians through residencies, performances, and recording projects. Lazy Eye Gallery presents exhibitions in a 64-square-foot micro gallery housed in a repurposed water tower.
YVML is led by Founding Director Heidi Schwegler and supported by a staff team in programs, facilities, music, and philanthropy. The Board of Directors provides financial, strategic, and governance oversight, supported by advisors with expertise in art, music, disability advocacy, Indigenous arts, education, law, accounting, accessibility, and community engagement. YVML allocates 5% of its operating budget toward accessibility and accommodations, offers scholarships and local discounts, and is developing the Sustainable Adobe Studio through its Campaign for Creative Access.
