Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Youth Policy Institute will collaborate with a Resident Artist to create two murals for our new Healthy Murals project, an arts-driven initiative that augments YPI’s Promise of Wellness for Hollywood (PWH) program. PWH and this new important arts component have 11 touchstone sites in high-need Hollywood neighborhoods. The murals will integrate with the community gardens being created at each site.

Organization Summary

YPI serves more than 112,000 individuals at a total of 138 program sites throughout high need L.A. neighborhoods. YPI operates five schools, 86 afterschool/bridge programs, and has opened 83 Public Computer Centers. Our services include early childhood education with parenting classes; K-12 academic support and expanded learning; college and career readiness; workforce preparation; health and wellness; asset building; and supportive services, including case management. All programs are provided free of charge. YPI also operates all three types of L.A. city service centers.

YPI is the only nonprofit in the country to receive all three signature federal Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative grants: Promise Neighborhood, Choice Neighborhood, and Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation. In 2014, YPI also became the lead implementation partner for the L.A. Promise Zone (one of the first five in the nation). YPI was awarded a second Promise Neighborhood in 2016 and a second Byrne grant in 2017.
