With support from the California Arts Council, WAKING THE VILLAGE will expand its Creation District program, by offering a free and vibrant, drop-in, arts center and recording studio to youth experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity between the ages of 18 and 24.
Waking the Village (WTV) leads 10 programs that offer housing, wellness support, childcare, creative community, and education and career services to youth and children. Each program centers on an interactive environment that inspires growth and builds community. We believe in the power of the arts and creativity, developing creative hubs rooted in the belief that youth and children need creativity and expression embedded into their lives in order to thrive and flourish. Our programs include:
Tubman House (2003): Transitional community serving pregnant or parenting youth and their children.
Art Beast Children’s Studio (2009): Children’s art space and family community center
The Creation District (2015): A wellness and leadership center for youth experiencing homeless. The District provides workshops, a music recording studio, a stage, dance space, and an open arts studio so that the arts can act as a vehicle for engagement, the strengthening of wellness, and leadership development.
Audre’s Emporium of New Tomorrows (2017): Transitional community serving LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness.
Art Beast Child Development Center (2017): Licensed preschool providing free care to Sacramento’s low income families and children of clients in our housing programs.
Prevention and Intervention (2018): Moves upstream to prevent homelessness or offer intervention through system navigation, family mediation, crisis funding, and warm hand offs.
Muck and Wonder Farm School (2018): Licensed preschool centered around nature and the arts
Youth Employment Program (2019): Supports youth experiencing homelessness in securing jobs and developing skills to retain long term employment.
The Village (2021): Shelter for young parents and their children offers low barrier entry and intensive services so that youth exit to best-fit, next step permanent housing.
