Project Description

Versa-Style Dance Company (VSDC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and dance ensemble that consists of committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles. We create highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to our community. These forms include street dance styles such as Hip Hop, House, Popping, Locking, Whacking and Krump, as well as Afro-Latin styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Afro-Cuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots, history, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation. Hip Hop breaks color lines by creating a forum where people come together for a common passion rather than grouping themselves by race or socio-economic backgrounds.
We identify ourselves as Hip Hop ARTivists and are dedicated to the global Hip Hop and street dance community through teaching classes and residencies, producing events and festivals, and participating in world wide battles and competitions, while also creating full-length dance theater works for the concert stage. As Hip Hop empowers historically racialized and underrepresented groups, VSDC embodies representation and inclusion on stage by presenting a multicultural cast and performing authentic Hip Hop and street dance forms. These dance forms are rarely seen on stage in the concert dance community, highlighting the need for representation and inclusion in our arts ecology. VSDC uses the art of Hip Hop dance to balance these societal inequalities and work toward a future full of hope, community, and freedom of expression.
