With support from the California Arts Council, URBAN x INDIGENOUS (UxI) will produce its fifth intercultural multidisciplinary arts festival, UxI 2020: Urban-Indigenous Futurism, at SOMArts Cultural Center through APICC’s city-wide United States of Asian America Festival in May 2020. Funding will be used to support commissioning and exhibition costs for 8 featured artists and 20 showcase artists who will re-imagine the San Francisco Bay Area urban jungle through an Indigenous futurist context.
URBAN x INDIGENOUS (UxI) serves emerging and mid-career Indigenous artists in showcasing new works, cultivating intercultural and intergenerational exchanges, and engaging in regenerative practices around identity, community, and wellness. UxI hosts an annual intercultural multidisciplinary arts festival at SOMArts Bay Gallery as part of APICC’s United States of Asian America Festival to reflect on our roles as settlers of Ohlone Territory/Turtle Island and deepen our connections to our respective ancestral lineages and Indigenous cultural practices. This intergenerational gathering seeks to re-commune, reconnect, and reorganize our urban-Indigenous family through visual art, performance, workshops, and dialogue that speak to the power of uniting in the face of adversity. Throughout the year, UxI offers accessible community workshops and open mic events as holistic process-based spaces rooted in Indigenous knowledge, storytelling, and healing through performance.
