With support from the California Arts Council, ALEXANDER VALLEY FILM SOCIETY (AVFS) will fund free after-school filmmaking camps for middle and high school aged students from local public schools.
In spring 2025, the True West Film Center James Redford Campus will open in downtown Healdsburg becoming the only organization of its kind serving filmgoers and filmmakers of all ages within the 4-county area of Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa, and Lake Counties, with ongoing theatrical screenings of first-run movies and art house fare, media arts education, and the annual True West Film Festival.
Year-round Programming – We produce year-round film screenings and events for the community to which they would not otherwise have access. We curate several year-round film series featuring diverse content and films relevant to the community’s needs and interests, including arthouse fare, classic titles, family-friendly content, and Spanish-language programming.
Youth Education – To close the gap in digital literacy and media arts skills training, we work with school districts, community groups, nonprofits, and youth leaders. We offer our public school partners integrated arts curriculum in core classes using teaching artists. Students also have access to extracurricular filmmaking workshops, field trips to film festivals, free screenings, and service learning opportunities.
True West Film Fest – Each spring, we celebrate the culmination of our year-round programs with the True West Film Festival, our 10-day film festival. The Festival regularly showcases and hosts new and emerging talents from all over the world. The Festival creates opportunities for the community to gather, celebrate film, and meet and learn from visiting artists. TWFC offers deeply discounted tickets to include students and low-income neighbors.
True West features cutting-edge indie films and selections of diverse works from and about underrepresented artists and communities. We actively seek socially conscious films that depict characters in the richness of their cultures and identities; works from directors of color; Latinx, LGBTQIA+, and women-driven narratives; and youth-oriented stories. We also feature local student works in the annual Student Film Competition.
