With support from the California Arts Council, TMDCI will partner with Salton Sea Authority and engage Tribal communities across the Coachella Valley to create a site-specific land art installation that raises awareness of the Salton Sea’s rapid disappearance. The project draws from the Cahuilla’s deep connection to this land and combines aspects of social justice, youth outreach and human health to address the Salton Sea crisis through the lens of Indigenous knowledge and artistic expression.
The Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians is a federally recognized sovereign Indian Tribe located in the Coachella Valley, straddling Riverside and Imperial counties. It administers a number of departments to serve members, Native children/families, the community, and the environment. Tribal lands are in a checkerboard pattern, some of which are submerged under the Salton Sea. The Tribe is an active participant in the Salton Sea restoration project and oversees various conservation activities at its Tribal wetlands. The Tribe also operates one of the largest Tribal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families programs in the nation offering comprehensive social services to eligible children/families in Riverside and Los Angeles counties; as well as Indian Child Welfare Act services through its Tribal Court. Departments/programs include Cultural Resources, Planning, Natural Resources, Child Development and Education Center, Senior Center, Administration, Security, TANF, among others.
