3Girls Theatre (3GT) develops, promotes, and presents new plays by Bay Area women playwrights. Fewer than 30% of new plays produced by American mainstream theatre in any given year are written by women. 3GT was founded in 2011 to challenge the cultural bias that favors men’s voices over women’s on stage.
3GT provides an artistic home for Bay Area women playwrights at all stages of their creative and professional process. We achieve this goal through our distinctive development and performance programs, each aimed at engaging and supporting different communities of women playwrights in the San Francisco Bay Area. These programs develop new plays written by Bay Area women for both traditional and experimental theatre, nurture women and girls ranging in age from 11-90+, and empower women of color and LBTQ+ playwrights. Hundreds of Bay Area artists – across ages, perspectives, and genders – now collaborate each year with 3GT to “put women’s work onstage, where it belongs.”
3GT believes in paying artists and theatre makers. It is a top priority of ours to pay everyone for the work they do for us, whether we are mounting a full production at a local theatre or staging guerilla readings in SF Bay Area community spaces. We also practice Radical Hospitality, meaning most of our programming is free, and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.
