Since its inception in 1986, B Street Theatre has been recognized as one of California’s leading professional theatres. As a resident new works theatre and core member of NNPN, B Street produces an acclaimed adult theatre series featuring new works and contemporary plays enjoyed by tens of thousands of patrons each year. B Street is the region’s only resident children’s theatre and LORT member, producing a dynamic children’s series that serves tens of thousands of K–12 students annually. The Family & Student Matinee Series features adaptations of classic stories, novels, and folktales, as well as depictions of historical figures and new plays, bringing high-quality theatre experiences to student audiences across the region.
The Sofia offers a vibrant presenting series featuring a wide range of live performances by world-renowned artists, including music, dance, comedy, and speaking engagements. It also serves as a creative home for local artists, nonprofits, and performing arts groups. Upstairs at the B, patrons experience new play readings, improv, story slams, and intimate musical performances in a flexible space that champions experimental work and emerging artists.

Central to B Street’s mission is its outreach and education programming. Professional teaching artists deliver hundreds of customizable in-school workshops each year, alongside a wide array of onsite classes, after-school programs, and professional development opportunities at The Sofia. These programs are designed to serve diverse communities, including individuals navigating the justice system and children receiving care through hospital-based programs. Additional educational initiatives include an immersive internship for early-career theatre professionals and a robust volunteer program that engages hundreds of community members annually.
