The San Francisco Neo-Futurists have been a staple of the downtown arts scene since our founding in 2013. Our work is immediate, unreproducible, and affordable, embracing those unreached or unmoved by conventional theater, and inspiring them to thought, feeling, and action.

We’ve held more than 700 performances, staging over 3,000 original plays for nearly 20,000 audience members. Our flagship weekly show “The Infinite Wrench” is an attempt to perform 30 short nonfiction plays in 60 minutes, with 2 to 12 new plays every weekend, 50 weekends a year. We frequently invite audience members onto the stage, leading to countless moments of connection and catharsis. We’ve won Best Theater Company in SF Weekly’s Best of SF Reader’s Poll & the SF Bay Guardian Best of the Bay, and were recommended as one of the “22 San Francisco things everyone should do in 2022” in the SF Chronicle.

In addition to our weekly show, we perform annual specialty shows celebrating historically excluded communities, including a benefit show for Pride, performed by our LGBTQIA+ ensemble members. We also teach workshops in partnership with local arts organizations and high schools, such as SFArtsEd, Oakland Technical High School, Endgames Improv, and the Richmond Neighborhood Center.

As creators of non-illusory theatre, we are especially interested in the voices of performers from historically excluded communities, and seek to resist conventional theatre’s failure to listen to or imagine queer and POC audiences. Our ensemble of local artists is 62% LGBTQIA+, 23% trans/nonbinary, and 46% POC (27.3% of ensemble identify as AAPI, 15% as Black, and 9.1% as Latinx/Hispanic). We make decisions by consensus to push against established hierarchy and give all members equal voice.
