The Robey Theatre Company, which began as a readers’ circle, is a nonprofit developmental theatre organization. Its mission is to develop and produce plays about global Black experiences and foster a community of theatre artists and creatives.
The organization was founded in 1994 and incorporated in 1996 by actors, long-time friends, theatre veterans Ben Guillory and Danny Glover. They envisioned an organization that would bring together actors and playwrights to establish community, share resources, and create opportunities for Black artists experiencing limited access brought on by racial inequities.
At its core, The Robey Theatre Company is committed to preserving, producing, and reinterpreting celebrated “Black Classics,” For more than a quarter-century, it has served Los Angeles with distinction. As a community of artists who believe in the transformational power of plays, The Robey Theatre Company is committed to telling essential, complex, socially conscious, and politically relevant stories.
