Organization Summary

The Jazz Bakery, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1992 and incorporated in 1993, was originally conceived and founded by jazz vocalist Ruth Price. It received international acclaim by presenting innovative, outstanding jazz artists from around the world, 350 nights a year. The Jazz Bakery has been recognized as “the most prestigious jazz space in Los Angeles” (LA Weekly). It has achieved international stature through Price’s uncompromising artistic vision offering a platform for jazz music that spans over 24 years of programming. With the Movable Feast series, we presented 24 concerts per year in calendar years 2017 and 2018, and it continues in venues across Los Angeles, including the Kirk Douglas Theatre, Musicians Institute Theater, REDCAT at Disney Hall, Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School, the Anne and Jerry Moss Theater and the Nate Holden Performance Center. It has also presented free concerts with Poncho Sanchez, Woodford Ehling, Dwight Trible and Bill Cunliffe in Culver City. With its 29-year history of presenting concerts and its flexibility in creating the Movable Feast series in the last six years, The Jazz Bakery has shown resilience, resourcefulness and capability. It has presented NEA Jazz Masters Anita O’Day, Art Farmer, Benny Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, Cecil Taylor, Gerald Wilson, Hubert Laws, Kenny Burrell, Marian McPartland, McCoy Tyner, Milt Jackson, Mose Allison, Nancy Wilson, and Yusef Lateef, among many other fine jazz artists. At its historic location at the Helms Bakery, JB produced regular master-classes and special events for elementary, high school and college students with local and touring artists. Artistic Director Ruth Price has shown consistent commitment to jazz education, and has launched numerous young artists into the mainstream jazz world through her progressive booking vision.
