With support from the California Arts Council, TEATRO DE LAS AMERICAS INCORPORATED will engage in a collaboration with local Latino communities to create a Performance piece based on the experiences of those communities, especially as they reflect racial inequity.
Since its foundation, Teatro has presented plays drawn primarily from Spanish-language playwrights from various countries. They are staged in Spanish with projection of English super-titles.
Over the years productions have involved over 300 actors, stage hands, and volunteers, and an audiences approaching 10,000. Actors, volunteers and audience range from farm-workers to professionals, from newly arrived, second, and later generation Spanish-speakers, to English-speakers who wish to learn or hone their skills in Spanish or simply wish to participate in theater. Teatro provides acting workshops to community members of all ages from among whom it draws casts and crews for its productions.
