With support from the California Arts Council, Teatros de las Américas in partnership with the Ventura County Probation Agency and the Ventura County Arts Council will offer arts instruction to adults recently released from the county jail as part of their re-entry plan. The workshops planned will be theater, painting and poetry with workforce training built into the workshops in set painting and planned murals.
Since its foundation, Teatro has presented plays drawn primarily from Spanish-language playwrights from various countries. They are staged in Spanish with projection of English super-titles.
Over the years productions have involved over 300 actors, stage hands, and volunteers, and an audiences approaching 10,000. Actors, volunteers and audience range from farm-workers to professionals, from newly arrived, second, and later generation Spanish-speakers, to English-speakers who wish to learn or hone their skills in Spanish or simply wish to participate in theater. Teatro provides acting workshops to community members of all ages from among whom it draws casts and crews for its productions.
