In The Band’s mission is to bring music education to children in underserved neighborhoods in Los Angeles. In 2019, we became In The Band, continuing the work we started in 2002 (formerly as Sound Art) to provide mobile music education programs taught by real musicians to Los Angeles schools and community centers. In addition, In The Band provides songwriting, recording and production to at-risk, homeless and foster youth, ages 18 – 25, living in transitional housing. The overarching objectives of our program are to provide quality music instruction that is culturally relevant to the youth we serve; engage students more fully in school; help at-risk youth stay in school and graduate; build self-confidence; assist youth in developing trusting relationships with mentoring adults; improve cognitive, analytical and creative skills; foster an understanding of personal identity, culture and connection with the community; and, provide training for potential future careers in LA’s multi-billion dollar industries.
