Project Description

With support from California Arts Council, Shakespeare’s Associates (dba SPARC Theater) will provide teaching artists for every 2nd grade classroom in the Livermore School District at no cost, to lead our “So Wise So Young” literacy program combining reading with performance, critical analysis with full-body experiences, and collaboration with creativity.

Organization Summary

MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS
SPARC creates art and community in summer seasons performed outdoors in local vineyards, with professional productions of plays by both Shakespeare and contemporary authors in our flagship program “Shakespeare in the Vineyard.” Over 2500 patrons from the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Central Valley join us each season in our 200-seat venue at Darcie Kent Vineyards. We bring the Shakespeare production indoors to neighboring Danville to expand our TriValley audience.

YOUTH EDUCATION
Offering both imaginative after-school/summer camps for elementary and middle school students, and classroom residencies using A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM to teach literacy and theater skills to second-graders, SPARC’S Education programs explore the power of imagination and creativity with our youngest citizens. Students learn self-confidence and creative collaboration leading to stronger outcomes in and out of school.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: NEW PLAYS
Science@Play is SPARC’s Social Justice Initiative commissioning thought-provoking scripts on a journey of exploration and discovery, written by historically underrepresented playwrights, centering scientists of color. We connect writers with local scientific and academic communities for research. Four new scripts have been presented in Festivals of staged readings including other contemporary plays on scientific themes such as Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES: NEW VENUE
SPARC has launched a city-wide movement to build a new theater building in downtown Livermore. The land has been purchased and the capital campaign is underway for a shared, mid-sized venue allowing us to enlarge our year-round programming and extend our education programs. We have established a Cultural Core of a dozen organizations, diverse in the race/ethnicity of the leaders, cultures represented, and art forms, to program and curate events in the new building. We recently signed an LOI with the largest performing arts organization in Livermore to collaborate on the project.
