The Santa Maria Philharmonic Society (SMPS) was founded under this name in 2000 but claims a longer tradition with G. Allan Hancock founding its predecessor in 1926. We present quality, reasonably priced symphonic music experiences of high artistic and enjoyment value for people of all ages and backgrounds. As Santa Maria’s only professional classical music orchestra in residence, we employ and support the artistic development of more than 60 area musicians and reach more than 6,700 adults and children each year with classical music in their own backyard.

Since 1975, we have provided the only consistent professional classical music exposure and education for area elementary students. Our youth programs include a Music Van, Children’s Concert Series, Family Concert, and Youth Showcase performance. All of our youth programming is offered free of charge.

Our current service area includes Santa Maria, Lompoc, Orcutt, Arroyo Grande, Guadalupe, and the Santa Ynez Valley. In addition to our Youth Outreach, each year we present a concert series featuring our orchestra and special guest artists. Ticket prices are kept at reasonable rates, including special rates to encourage students, families, and members of the military to attend.
