With support from the California Arts Council, ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! (a community-based collaboration between UCSB Arts & Lectures, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center, Isla Vista School, and The Marjorie Luke Theatre) will provide up to 15,000 low-income, underserved students and families with access to free performances, workshops, and in-school assemblies.
The Marjorie Luke Theatre, built in 1933, is an 808 seat Spanish Colonial Revival Theatre located on the Santa Barbara Junior High School (SBJHS) campus. A joint-use partnership with Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) enables us to serve both students and community groups seeking an affordable, professional venue for their culturally diverse performances and events. We annually serve 230+ arts and education organizations, 650+ students of SBJHS and welcome over 38,000 audience members.
Santa Barbara Magazine has described The Marjorie Luke Theatre as “An award-winning, beautiful, state of the art theatre. The People’s Theatre.” We proudly offer a high-quality, accessible, and affordable home for local arts and educational organizations and students from the Santa Barbara community, many from lower socio-economic backgrounds, enabling them to experience the joy of live theatre.
We are proud to be the third largest indoor theatre in Santa Barbara, and the most affordable per seating capacity in the area. Our Rent Subsidy program makes The Luke an even more accessible venue to local nonprofit or grassroots organizations serving youth, or marginalized demographics. This Rent Subsidy fund is fully a win-win for The Luke and our community rentals. Our goal is to put funding back into these performing arts programs ensuring their longevity, long term success, and their future rentals of The Luke Theatre.
