San Jose Japantown seeks state designation as a Cultural District. As one of only three remaining in the US, San Jose Japantown is a cultural jewel of the region with vibrant annual events, historic sites predating the WWII Incarceration, and a thriving community of artists and culture bearers. These cultural assets weave together to anchor this unique neighborhood with its long history of multiculturalism and inclusion. Cultural District designation and the related funding would support and accelerate sustainability efforts through the convening of community partners, increased branding/visibility, and the investment in staff to coordinate these initiatives. This support will strengthen cultural preservation and production and further uplift the Japanese and Asian experience here in San Jose and beyond.
