Founded in 1959, SFMT creates and produces socially relevant theater of the highest professional quality and performs it before the broadest possible audience. In our structure and our art SFMT presents an alternative to the corporatization of America, and to give audiences information, analysis, and tools needed to create a society benefitting ALL, not just the wealthy elite. A Collective, SFMT exists not only to create activist art but also to embody our ideals of equity: we are a democratically run, multiethnic, multi-generational, multi-cultural, gender-balanced theater of Social Justice that sustains a vision of community governance of, by, and for the People. SFMT accomplishes our mission by creating and producing original musical theater productions each year, performing these works for free in local parks throughout the Bay Area, Northern CA and beyond. In addition, SFMT trains high school and college-age young low-income youth-of-color in play writing and acting.
