With support from the California Arts Council, San Diego Urban Warriors in partnership with artist Dajahn Blevins, will engage residents of up to fourteen of San Diego’s African American neighborhoods in positive, creative, and community-building activities. This year-round process will culminate with the 29th annual Kuumba Fest, a three-day performance festival at San Diego Repertory Theatre celebrating African American expression, culture, and heritage.
San Diego Urban Warriors builds an urban arts community that empowers children and their families. Through our work, we advocate for self-determination; teach discipline and responsibility; and provide opportunities for artists and community members to explore collective artistic experiences that can enrich and transform their lives. Core programs and services include:
• Kuumba Kidz African Culture Saturday School;
• Black Boys 2 Men Group Mentoring Reading Empowerment Circles;
• Urban Warriors Inc. Servant Leader Program Workshops UPAKA Services;
• In Home Services: counseling, cultural enrichment and interactive workshops;
• Theatre-based Services: Theatrical activities for insight, social skills, personal change and cultural enrichment;
• Community Site-based Services: Edu-tainment activities that provide skills, practice and resources for safe, healthy active fit lifestyles and communities;
• An annual Kuumba Festival celebrating African American expression, culture and heritage.
