With the support from the California Arts Council, San Diego Junior Theatre will provide a 10-week residency to two Title 1 schools during the 2019-20 school year. A team of two theatre artists (director/choreographer and music director) will work with K-5 students in 90-minute sessions, once per week, to create an original “mini musical.” This process will help students to understand the the tools of the actor, while encouraging and inspiring teamwork, imagination, empathy, and resiliency.
Currently in our 75th Season, Junior Theatre is the oldest youth theatre in the nation, serving more than 35,000 students and audience members annually, offering a comprehensive arts education program for children between the ages of 3 and 18. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and aligned with the California Arts Standards. Over the past two decades Junior Theatre has developed strong partnerships with San Diego schools that have engaged our program for curriculum-based theatre education, after school outreach programs, and student matinee performances.
Each season Junior Theatre curates a diverse selection of productions. Current students between ages 8 and 18 are invited to audition, or work on the backstage crew for seven main stage productions that include Broadway musicals, adaptations from children’s literature, and Shakespeare.
