With support from the California Arts Council, Rhythmic Pathways (RP) will continue its musical education program that promotes music education and social-emotional learning in the Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro, CA. Coordinated with the innovative RP re-entry program, funds received will support program expansion to meet growing demand.
Our core programs are: 1) Pathways – A music education program serving youth involved in the Juvenile Justice Centers in San Leandro, CA and in Sacramento, CA; specifically designed and proven to meet the unique needs of justice-involved youth, the program uses a marching, rhythm, and drumming musical education curriculum that builds social-emotional learning skills, provides a re-entry pathway to a healthy community, and aims to reduce recidivism. Using restorative justice methodologies including healing and reentry circle groups, participants use current music as the launch pad for discussions about their situations and then, using the beats behind the music, students learn to read the music notation, write their own notation, and perform the beats to their songs. 2) Rhythm Cadets Drumline – a free, community based, marching percussion group serving youth ages 8-19 that provides percussion education and performance opportunities in the local communities we serve. 3) Entertainment Group – a professional performance group that is available for corporate events, private events, and public sporting events. The Entertainment Group is able to customize performances for various client needs and provides a stipend to its cast members. The aim is to see participants from the JJC and pathways programs return to the community and have a group to belong to in the community drumline. If they are so inclined, they can reap the fruits of their program participation by becoming part of the Performance Group.
