With support from the California Arts Council, Rhythm Arts Alliance will facilitate 3, 12 week African drum, dance and song workshops at underserved Los Angeles parks for youth ages 10-15. Youth leaders from the program, will be chosen to help mentor new and younger participants. Our goal is to create an ongoing community presence at various parks throughout Los Angeles County to support the different developmental stages of our youth.
In addition to conducting classes for incarcerated youth through our collaboration with AHJN, RAA offers drumming, dance and song workshops in schools and community centers throughout Los Angeles County. Over the last ten years, RAA has expanded from one drum class a week at a single probation camp location to at least six classes per week, with access to the entire LA County probation system, including Juvenile Day Reporting Centers. Our workshops have expanded to include dance, song and music production instruction. We have collaborated with such diverse partners as the Children’s Defense Fund in their Freedom Schools program, and Sankofa at their inaugural Many Rivers Festival attended by over 15,000 people from across America. Additionally, RAA has worked with San Carlos High School on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, and we have developed a special partnership with Central High School that serves as a home to pilot our curriculums in the public schools.
